In all honesty...

I know many of you would like to see DC hit the road sooner rather than later, my jury is still out on him but I do have a question...

In all honesty does anyone believe that if we could hire a coach like Nick Saban to be the head coca at Wyoming that we would be a perennial title contender and BCS buster year-after-year?

I have to be honest even with the likes of a Saban I do not believe we could, I wish we could but you know about wishing in one hand and doing something else in the other.

When HCDC was hired we were all in shock about it. He was the reigning assistant of the year for the past couple of seasons before he was hired, and his name was mentioned with a lot of big name schools. I feel like we're in a position to get great coaches, but we need to increase what we're paying to assistants before we can make a big splash.

How about a Chris Petersen or a Mike Price? How about the next Urban Meyer? How about the next Bob Devaney?

Here's a news flash- Nick Saban didn't go from grad assistant to head coach at Michigan State...

Building programs is a step-by-step process. We aren't even at step two- competing in the upper half of the conference. We'll talk about "BCS-busting" when we contend consistently for conference championships.

If you don't think this is a possible thing- then perhaps you should go bowling with SDPoke...

I absolutely believe if we got Nick Saban we would be in BCS Bowls year after year. Well not anymore with the new 4 team playoff. I think the non-BCS schools will always be screwed out of them, but under our CURRENT system, yes we would be going to BCS Bowls with Nick Saban.
He gets recruits.
Alabama doesn't get recruits. Nick Saban and his staff get recruits.
Nick Saban in Laramie gets every 3 and 4 and 5 star recruit in Colorado, and goes into Texas, the south, and Cali and gets elite talent.
Same thing would happen if we got Jack Del Rio from the Broncos.
People wanted him at USC and he turned it down.
If we got Jack Del Rio we would be getting elite recruits.
Plus we would be playing awesome defense.
Wyoming would be winning 10 in a DOWN year (much like Boise) and would be going undefeated in MWC play consistently.

So you honestly believe Nick Saban in Laramie out-recruits, oh, say Chris Petersen in Tuscaloosa?

I just want a coach that can recruit to Laramie, get some players with a bit more ability and overall compete year in and year out for conference championships, maybe not every year but maybe ever 3-4 years

Is it possible for Wyoming to contend for MWC championships year in and year out? Yes.

Is it as easy as hiring the right coach? Maybe, but there isn't a soul on earth who knows who Mr. Right is.

Odds of finding this special someone? I think we are now learning that they are very low...

Is not consistently competing for a MWC championship worth ranting, raving, and having heart attacks over? Hardly.

I'm all for having goals and big expectations, but the only way for goals to be attainable is for them to be realistic. Magically becoming a perennial power by simply hiring one person isn't realistic.

Our defense would be a hell of a lot better, I can guarantee you that.

Year 1? No.
Wait til Wyoming starts winning and becomes the hot new choice.
Year 4? Maybe not out recruiting them, but good enough to be in BCS Bowls every other season.

If you're going to disagree with me that's fine, but don't sit there all condescending and dwell on the 1 thing I said about Bama recruiting.

We had been recruiting good defensive players to Laramie. The thing is, you need a staff that can do something with them or hold onto them. He didn't recruit most of them, but DC has had a great deal of talent to work with on the defensive side of the ball. Some of the guys are Unrein (NFL) , Prosinski (NFL), T. Gipson (NFL), Knapton (AFL). Gary (All-American, Ok. State 2nd leader in tackles this season). Then there were a handful that haven't gone on, but could certainly play a little, Fletcher, M. Gipson, Hendricks, Biezuns (goal-line stand!), Johnson, Ghaali Muhammad. We can recruit this level of talent, but we need a staff that can utilize them and who actually cares about the defense.

Well, of course not, Saban wasn't a title contender or BCS bowl participant at Michigan State, so why would he be able to reach those heights at Wyoming?

The better question is: if we had a coach like Nick Saban, would we be a winning program and contend for the MWC? I believe the answer is yes.

We are not trying to compete with LSU and Alabama. We are trying to compete with San Jose State, Utah State, and New Mexico.

I think we need more funding to get legit coordinators in order to be competitive year in and year out in the mwc regardless of head coach. One man cannot do it all.

I agree. As do a bunch on this message board.

There are a lot of parts that have to be on the same page, for that to work. Starting with the UW AD, then the UW Prez's office. Another crucial part is the (horrific) trustees UW has, and lastly, with the State itself (Governor on down).
