If YOU were the AD...

First of all, they need to change the paradigm for choosing a coach and running a team.

Look at football: A team is really two separate teams - an offensive one and a defensive one. So what should be done?
Have two head coaches (co-coaches, as it were) one for offense and one for defense, working independently.

The AD should recruit (possibly with the help of a committee) and hire each one independently, picking the best he can for each category. Separate offices, equal pay, equal status and authority for their particular responsibility.

And still only one will get the wins and losses. Besides you just described an OC and a DC. Two separate offices. They call the shots on offense and Defense. They are in charge of their recruiting, they are in charge of their positions coaches. They only answer to the Head Coach who just gives the okay or no to the coords.

There is a very big difference to what you have said to what I suggest: The Head Offensive Coach DOES NOT choose the Head Defensive Coach. They don't even have to know each other initially. The AD chooses each. The Defensive Coach can be replaced by the AD without recommendation, approval, or consent of the Offensive Coach (and vis-versa). Win and Loss credit? The team and school will get the credit. The individual coaches can make their cases individually about wins and losses to prospective employers, if a change is necessary.

An interesting approach. For all intents and purposes, the OC would be the head coach in this scenario as he would be the one making all the "head coach decisions" such as going for it on 4th, trick plays, clock management, etc. So then do we hire a 3rd guy as special teams coordinator or put him under O or D. then can he only use players from that "department"? Lots of tricky questions there. One thing is certain, it would certainly lead to some interesting sideline interactions between the 2 coaches, as neither would have to answer to the other.

I increase the salary allotment for assistant coaches, and allow DC to hire a real DC and D-line coach. I still think DC can be a head man, we do not have a competent staff aside from Pete, possibly Gesser. Personally this is the real problem. We are an incomplete staff and team.

+1

Bobby Petrino - I do believe we could hire him away from Western Kentucky and he has proven he can win games. Lets forget about his off field stuff and hope that is behind him.

OC: Oregon States O-Coordinator
DC: BYU D-Coordinator

Why would a Pac-12 coach leave for a lower tier MWC team? And why would a BYU coordinator take a coordinator job here?

Most coaches try to work up, not down.

it's almost like we're getting a bonus by not having an OC, paying a HC and OC in the same mold, it works sometimes but will be interesting to see what happens next year, never thought I'd ever say this but yet again hiring new D coaches and starting from scratch, typical Wyoming football and sports in general

We could start with someone with a personality

I don't care if he has a personality if he wins. I'd take Saban, and he is a joyless jerk. DC's asshole routine doesn't cut it when his teams blow every year.
