I don't know any time a player is given a release. The article makes it sound like with a release the player can play immediately the next year. That never happens(except for the graduated senior route like Darden on UW). ACS was able to do what every college football player does when they transfer....sit out a year. In ACS's case use your redshirt while sitting out a year. I didn't even know it was possible for a coach to grant a player the ability to leave and play right away(maybe there isn't but thats what the article implies) but I do know I have never seen it.

The release has to do with the player being granted a scholarship for the year immediately after transferring.
