I survived the Vic Koenning Era and thought that was the worse era ever

I was wrong.

Sawvell makes me wish Keonning was coaching the football team now.

I also wish UW Admin would get their collective heads outta their asses and make a lot of positive changes like firing both Burman and Sawvell!!!!!! It would save the football program from becoming a bottom feeder at the I-AA/FCS level.

Guys, things are rough right now but I also was around in the Koenning era and it was tragically, historically terrible. He won ONE Mountain West game in three years (a miracle against AFA). I know, tougher conference back then, whatever, but most of those losses were not close either.

Koennig wins
2000 Central Michigan
2001 Furman, @ Utah St
2002 Citadel, #22 Air Force

Sawvel wins
2024 Air Force, @New Mexico, @ Washington St
2025 @ Akron, Northern Iowa, San Jose St, Colorado St
2026 ???

Regrettably, I'll take Sawvel.

The schedules aren’t really comparable though. I actually think Koenning wins more than Sawvel if given the same schedule. I don’t think Sawvel beats Furman (that was a good FCS team).

Koenning probably wins 8 games against next year’s cupcake schedule.

I would disagree. In 2002 there were 7 games decided by 1 touchdown or less. In 2001 we lost to Texas a&m by 1 score. I think our team was much better back in the Koening era than it is now. It is close, but I would say those teams would beat the Sawvel teams 8 out of 10 times because they could score points and had athletes on defense. We can't say the same about these past 2 years.

Actually in looking at it again, it seems that Vic was left with nothing from Dimel and was building in the right direction by the end. I was all about making the change to Glenn back then but in looking at the scores now, it seems it was building towards the 2004 season being a good one and it was pretty good. The Freshman class of the 2001 year would have been seniors in 2004. I still 100% agree with getting rid of Koening when we did.

I’m not sure it’s predictable but how much revenue will be lost in season ticket renewals, lack of game day ticket sales, apparel, and concessions by sticking with Sawful? I am not alone in already knowing I won’t be going to any football games next season. Quite a few of my friends and family feel the same way.

Whatever. It's like choosing between being on the Titanic or in the water with that shark from Jaws. The outcome is the same - and inevitable.
I think the only point of this entire thread is it's time to move on from Sawvel just like it was time to move on from Koening! As soon as possible.

I am not bailing on UW football...probably until the day I die. It is my favorite live sport to watch, and I absolutely love watching the brown & gold at the War, yes, even when we suck ass (although infuriating at times). The game day environment is a blast, and the buzz is spectacular...from tailgating to our awesome WTMB and beyond.

Koenning's first year was probably the worst football I've ever seen. We couldn't get the right number of players on the field at least once per game. The coaching was really atrocious up and down the line. It was not his fault that his predecessor hired Matsakis to run his Emporia State offense and we lost every tight end on our roster. His replacement at DC couldn't run the show at all.

It was better his second year, but we always made some key error to lose games. Joe Glenn was hired and solved both the CEO and assistant coach qualification issues.

To me, Vic was a great DC and he proved that again at Troy and Clemson later. Not CEO type head coach material. And it didn't help that most of his assistants were not the best.

Sawvel was handed a better situation than Vic, but we have seen the same CEO level deficiencies as Vic. That was demonstrated in his other head coaching stint as well. I think we will have to fire him whenever we can afford it.

My two cents…I’d take Koenning over Sawvel.

There is just something about a Sawvel coached team that I can’t stand. I’ve been unable to bring myself to watch the vast majority of games these last two seasons because they just upset and disgust me to a level where it ruins my day. I decided my family doesn’t deserve that version of me because of a football game.

I knew he was the wrong hire as soon as I watched his first game at the helm on the road at ASU. That game was just dysfunction at every level.

Credit should be given to Sawvel. I didn’t think it was possible for the offense to look or perform worse than it did in the Arizona State game; but I think he found a way late this season.
