I know we are tempering enthusiasm but...

Look, I know we are a young team and are going to struggle, but I'm shocked at just how terrible the MWC is. I'm serious when I say we might be the worst FBS conference in the nation. If we aren't the worse, we sure are not much better than the worse.

I think WSU will struggle this year, but, honestly, I think they are about par for the rest of the teams we face sans a few (like BSU). The Appy State vs. Old Dominion game will be interesting.

Anyway, we will be in a lot more games this season than I thought after watching week 1. Two things have happened: we've shown improvement and the rest of the conference has been exposed for how bad everyone is.

I'm sorry, but if it takes 8 years to get to 7 wins in this dumpster fire, something is terribly wrong. The level of play in the MWC has dropped precipitously and is MUCH worse than expected. In other words, we really aren't that far behind--even this year.

I've never thought it would take 8 years to win 7 games, I don't think anyone has.

That being said, I'm not going to expect that type of season until we see more progress. That doesn't mean I'm giving up on the team, it's the stance I've always held. This isn't an immediate rebuild like the type that Dave Christensen thought he could do. Building a program the right way takes a few years.

I'm optimistic about our future in the slumping MWC.

Agreed. I thought the Sheep probably were a very good team up until Minnesota struggled with Kent State and then CSU looked toothless against a pretty terrible CU team.

They returned a good receiver, but not the QB who threw to him. They returned a solid o-line, but lost their RB who made them look better.

I'm still mum for now. WSU lost to Portland Freaking State and narrowly beat a Rutgers team in more turmoil than any program in college football. Again, they're P5 in brand and pocket book only. I think several MW teams would beat them.

The team is a home dog vs. UNM this week. Beat them, and I'll begin to entertain the idea of progress being made in 2015. For now, this team is 0-3 when it should be 2-1.

I'm definitely not thinking we win more than expected. I wouldn't be surprised to win 0-3 games. Anything over that, at this point, would be a pleasant surprise.

Before, I wasn't sure that we would be within 2 or 3 TDs of anyone this year. I think we do a little better than that after seeing how bad the MWC is.

Oh okay lol. Gawd I hope it never gets that bad. FWIW, I have Wyo winning this weekend in a barn burner.

The MWC is not so good, I agree. But we are a conference that's in transition. We had stronger programs in recent years, that unfortunately have left, and that weakens the rest of us as far as competition and recruiting is concerned. Today the AP rankings have all 3 of the teams that have left recently, ranked. If most of the other conferences lost their 3 top teams, they'd be looking fairly weak as well. Especially the other smaller conferences. We need to build it back up, which will happen. The MWC will never have a National Champion, it is just impossible. But we'll eventually get to the point where we'll have the new TCU and Utah knocking off good teams from top conferences. That is, as long as we can get the top conferences to schedule us bottom feeders. It also wasn't long ago that that the MWC was consecutively having the best wining percentage in bowl games. Not against USC and Florida, but still against some "better" conference teams with larger budgets, larger fan bases and sexier campuses. Not saying we were equals to those conferences, as our top teams were playing their middle teams, but we did well.

I'm not that upset by the WSU game, nor am I overjoyed. I figured we'd cover and with a couple bounces in our direction, we could win. Unfortunately, they got the turn-overs in our half of the field, and they won. The MWC is not so good, so we still have a shot at winning a few games and building some momentum. Let's face it, basic math means that some of the MWC teams are going to be bowl eligible, so we'll get to see how we fare vs. some of the other conference bowl eligible teams at the end of the year. That'll be a good gauge as to where we sit compared to the other conferences.

Go Pokes!
