I've said it before.

How to win in basketball. Hire John Calipari. Tell him to name his price and pony up.

How to win in football. Hire Urban Meyer. Tell him to name his price and pony up.

We actually had a chance at Urban Meyer, but he chose Utah. Utah went 10-2 in his first season. That was only Utah's 2nd 10 win season in their 111+ year history. They went undefeated the next year. Utah had no football tradition before Urban Meyer, now the Pac 10 wants them. Utah won 0 outright WAC/MWC championships from 1958 to 2003 (urban meyer). If Wyoming had gotten Urban Meyer, We would be the TCU of the MWC right now. Then if another program came along like Florida, we double or triple their offer to make sure he stays. We would more than be able to pay the extra salary with sold out crowds and BCS bowl games every year.

We blew the opportunity on Urban Meyer. This Dave Christensen experiment will never work. Dave does not play defense and should not have any say on anything that has to do with defense, ever. I knew that and told everyone about it when we hired him. Remember my prediction: Offense better, Defense worse; much worse. Spot on. 536 yards of offense and another loss.
Once we see the next coach winning like crazy at ball state, or bowling green we need to pony up the cash.

Maybe or pony up the cash for top assistant/coordinators for DC. We probably could of hired rocky long as a d coordinator and that would be a huge upgrade over Marty.

Urban makes 4 mil a year at FL. Our entire athletic budget is 25 mil I believe, so you want to pay him 12 mil a year?

It could be a good investment in the long run. Hire an Urban Meyer like coach, the media attention and athletic budget immediately improve. Attendance would skyrocket and we would probably have a winner on the field sooner rather than later. However I think we need to stick with what we have for at least 2-3 more years. We made our bed with DC as coach, let's see how it plays out.

From the beginning of my time here, I have never felt like our athletic department wants to be a big time program and this is coming from a guy who grew up going to Vanderbilt games.

Do I want to pay Urban Meyer 12 million a year to come to Wyoming.

ABSOLUTELY!! Same goes for John Calipari.. They can win and recruit anywhere. They pay for themselves.

Let me ask you this. Is 8 million dollars a year worth turning the Wyoming Cowboys into a Perennial Powerhouse for the next 30 years? How much extra income would a sold out War Memorial every game, BCS bowl Game, etc.. every year generate? The state of Wyoming has the money. When Florida wanted Urban Meyer, we should've doubled their offer.

Its not even a question.

Pretty ridiculous thread to start. It will never happen, but I like dreaming too. Most of the oil and gas money go to education in the state. Our state is projected to have a surplus again in a recession. Coach's salary would be peanuts if a Gov or a lot of the Legislature were really into cowboy football. If any state could afford to pony up some money, I think it could be us. It just can't happen because our Legislature are a bunch of old farts from tiny towns that don't give a crap. We can't even get powerball when something like 70% of the people want it. Wouldn't that be sweet if we got powerball to the state and used it to fund Cowboy athletics and the Game and Fish?? Then we would have sweet ass sports and then could get rid of out of state hunting tags (unless you're a UW alum or former resident of course). While we are dreaming, why not just hire Coach K instead of fuckstick CAlapari?

This is it completely, totally. I have been saying this for years. It's what we need to get UW athletics to where it should be. Our Govenors & Legislatures don't understand the amount of pride statewide UW athletics mean to the people of this state - they think they do and say they do, but they don't do what they need to do to make UW athletics successful.

Great Pro coaches don't always equal great college coaches. Plus Cowher will be going to Carolina after this year while Gruden will be going to Dallas.

If you have Matt Mead's facebook page or something like that message him about it. Ive talked to him and he always seems willing to listen. And I know for a fact he likes Wyoming sports

I second that, could not get him on my Redskins in the NFL so bring him to Wyoming and make him a Cowboy!!!

I love Cowher, but if people think Schroyer yelling at kids is bad, wait till they get the spit shower!

actually i strongly believe that cowher will not be coaching again...brodcasting is just too cushy

I have posted on this before but I think a Salary based on the MWC average with performance incentives that matching the highest salary of any MWC coach who we beat conference standings. Then I would even do the same for finishing ranked in the top 25, match the highest salary of any coach we beat in the year end rankings. That would mean if the Pokes are ranked and say Florida or Alabama have a down year our coach could make Urban Meyer or Nick Saban money. If we beat TCU in the MWC standings our coach makes the same as Gary Patterson. I think a coach with a big ego could like the challenge of proving how good they really are by winning at UW, and then when they do, they get rewarded like they would be paid elsewhere. Or it would be attractive to an up and coming coach (like Dave C?) and help retain them when they win consistently. Win a National Title and you are guaranteed to make as much as any other coach. 3 million goes a lot further in Laramie than it does in Alabama.

I like laxwyo's idea of running the Powerball to fund the coaches salary. That seems more feasible than waiting for one of us to come up with a billion dollar idea. If the state of Wyoming could fund 3 million a year the thing could eventually self fund itself, I doubt we are going to win the national title every year so the excess could sit, grow, reinvest and hopefully eventually grow into an amount that could fund itself on investment income alone. I have said it before but I would love to be the weird school out West that pays for superior coaching. We CAN buy coaches, that is legal, buying players is not (Auburn).

I would even prioritize the sports that get this plan
1 Football duh
2 Wrestling (to keep Branch and build a long term program)
3 Womens basketball (reward Joe L for what he has already accomplished and what he will again)
4 Volleyball (To reward Yerty who is improving that program as well)
5 Mens Basketball to try to regain some of our old tradition of winning
6 all others....

realistically, it would be easiest to implement with the cheaper coaches first but lets face it Football rules and sets the tone for the whole school year. But seriously UW may want to consider this NOW to keep Branch who already has a ranked wrestling team and I am sure relatively cheaper than Football or basketball coaches.

It's not that the state of Wyoming is exactly hurting for money, what with all of the money the state makes off of gas, oil, uranium, etc., just that football doesn't seem to be as big of a thing here as it is in other places. It also doesn't help that the nearst major city happens to be a pro sports town with just about every pro sport there is. Plus they already have 3 in-state schools, 2 of which are in the same conference. If we would even return to they late 80s early 90s type of football, then I would think that there would be more suppor from the state government. As it is now, why bother when they can spend it on things that have been proven to be successful?
