I hate Pistol Pete and Memorial Stadium

As a fan of the University of Wyoming, I love our Logo and everything that is Unique about Wyoming. What I don't like is sharing names and Mascots with other teams.

For Example; Memorial Stadium?? Pistol Pete?? I hate any Stadium that uses the word "memorial".

Kansas, Indiana, Indiana State, Nebraska, and Clemson all play at Memorial Stadium.. Yank.

Memphis, Dartmouth, VMI, Presbyterian, Florida A&M, Navy, USC, Wyoming, Jackson St., Oklahoma all have Memorial something or other in the name of their Stadium/Field. UGH. There is probably others I'm missing.

I believe New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, and Wyoming all share Pistol Pete as their Mascot.. That's gay.

I also hate the fact that Rag Time Cowboy Joe was originally from ARIZONA and we kinda stole the song and changed the lyrics to Ol' Wyoming and made it ours.

On a sidenote; Do we rollover for Utah this week?

The stadium was built in 1950 in memory of all the troops who gave their lives in WWII. Hence the name War Memorial Stadium, and not just "Memorial Stadium."

As for Pistol Pete, yes, we took it from Ok State, but we had already been the Cowboys for about 20 years when they decided to go with that name. So it goes both ways there.

I think Pistol Pete is gay too. There's even looks like ours. We should call our mascot, Jonah Hex. The stadium name doesn't bother me, but it's even gayer now that it's Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium. We should just go full blown flamer and call it Mile and a Half High Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium.

Want to change the name of the stadium or the field come up with a sizable donation to the school, other wise quit your bitchin

So you don't like having a stadium dedicated to the memory of Wyoming's fallen soldiers.....go f**k yourself!

We've only had Pistol Pete and Ragtime Cowboy for a gazillion years. Sure a version of ragtime cowboy joe had the man coming from Arizona....big deal. Think Ol Rocky Top was written for the Tennessee sports program? Find something real to bitch about. And go f**k yourself one more time for disrespecting soldiers killed in war time.

OK st Pistol Pete looks way different but they put our pistol Pete in their logo and on their field. Also I'm not sure when we got Pistol Pete but we were the Cowboys about 50 years before them. I wanna say that they were the Tigers before that.

Since I live in beautiful hell aka Oklahoma  ....

First off, Okie State was known as the Oklahoma A & M Aggies from it's start in 1890 (Christmas Day no less) to 1957 (same year Colorado A & M became CSU AKA Fort Fart U).

Secondly, Okie State had the Bill "Pistol Pete" Picken logo long before we did but Wyoming was smart enough to get the trademark for it first so OSU and NMSU had to pay UW for the use of the logo.

Third, I did believe we retired the logo along with NMSU retiring it so OSU is the only school to have it now.

Got it?! Good!!! :tickedoff:

Most mascots are gay as aids, so I don't think this is just a Wyoming thing. The only cool mascot that was entertaing was the old Monte years back at UM. I hate the school, but that Monte was talented and entertaining to watch.
It could be worse though, "Cowboy Ken" could be the mascot, haha

This is true, but Joe moved to Wyoming shortly after that song was written and he's lived in Laramie ever since...

idk, i've seen a lot of the "retro" pistol pete mascot stuff at the B&G this year

Is there any actual memorial at the stadium or is it just in a name? I can't remember anything while I was attending, but when you're a asshole drunk student, you don't really care about much except getting some trim.

I believe the University officially retired it, but that doesn't stop clothing manufacturers from using it.

There are a couple of good mascots, imo. I like the Syracuse orange and the Stanford tree. I'm not sure the tree still exists as a mascot but it was funny watching the tree wander around the field. Maybe we should have an oil derek or wind turbine for a mascot.

I know I'm in the minority, but I miss inflatable. Watching inflatable do the worm down the football field was hilarious.

What happened to him? He was there when I was working the games back in '04 and '05, but noticed he isn't around anymore.

He sure does. He was running around all over during the USC game.
Best mascot ever.

There is a memorial to the war veterans who died it is located in the North End Zone the same one the Cowboys enter the field from. From what I know it was just put there recently in the last 5 years or so.

Well, being a fan of both UW and Oklahoma State, I have to jump in on this one. I attended OSU and am pretty sure we came up and trademarked the logo. Here is some info from my OSU pals,

"From the 1890s on, Oklahoma A&M sports teams had been referred to as the Agriculturists or Aggies, the Farmers, and officially but unpopularly, the Tigers. By 1924 Charles Saulsberry, sports editor of the Oklahoma City Times, and other writers who regularly covered college events had begun to refer to Stillwater's teams as the A&M Cowboys. The Athletic Council authorized Athletic Director Edward C. Gallagher to have 2,000 balloons printed, "Oklahoma Aggies - Ride 'Em Cowboy" for sale at football games in 1926.

Around 1923, when Oklahoma A&M College was searching for a new mascot to replace their tiger (which had been copied from Princeton and accounts for the orange and black school colors), a group of students saw Frank Eaton leading the Armistice Day Parade. He was approached to see if he would be interested in being the model for the new mascot, and he agreed. A likeness was drawn and began to be used on sweatshirts, stickers, etc. and a tradition was born. That caricature was the basis for what is used today as the official Oklahoma State University mascot. For thirty-five years, the crusty old cowboy was a living symbol of OSU, representing the colorful past of the area. As such, he would attend OSU athletic events, building dedications, etc., and sign autographs, pose for photographs and reminisce about the American Old West with anyone who would listen. In more recent years, the University of Wyoming and New Mexico State University began using variations of OSU's artwork as logos for their schools. To this day, his likeness is a visible reminder of the Old West to literally millions of people yearly as a symbol of colleges whose mascots pay homage to the cowboy.

However, it was not until 1958 that "Pistol Pete" was adopted as the school's mascot. The familiar caricature of "Pistol Pete" was officially sanctioned in 1984 by Oklahoma State University as a licensed symbol.

Each year, an average of 15 Oklahoma State students audition to portray Pistol Pete. A panel of former "Petes" conduct the tryouts and select two replacements based largely on an interview. Candidates are also asked to exhibit themselves as they would during in-game scenarios.

The two students chosen share around 650 appearances per year, which includes all OSU Cowboy and Cowgirl athletic events, though Pistol Pete has also assumed a significant role as an ambassador and symbol for Oklahoma State University at large. As such, Pistol Pete is often asked to make appearances in parades, community festivals, corporate functions, weddings and birthday parties.

President Thep Phongparnich of Thailand's Maejo University received Oklahoma State's Distinguished International Alumni Award on November 12, 2005, following which his university also adopted Pistol Pete as a mascot. "
That's all for todays history lesson...

NO, the Pokes will not roll over this weekend, and will pull out the W. Best game of the year will be Saturday. Write that down.

Oh, and what about those pricks, the Dallas "Cowboys"? They stole our nickname! Originally they were the steers. Now you know the origin of the whole steer / queer thing.
