You don't really "break in" a football helmet. It doesn't get stronger the more hits it takes, in fact, the opposite is true.
My mistake, poorly worded. Meant the consistency of proper fit and such. A ton of upkeep from the equipment staff to keep them fitted correctly with travel, etc.
This is why the NFL's use of throwback unis has gone down - a new rule requires players to wear the same helmet all season (unless it is damaged, obviously) since, in theory, it's safer to wear one that has been fitted to your exact specifications rather than have to wear a new one on alternate uni day. You'll notice that the NFL teams that do wear throwbacks, they wear ones that use the same color of helmet as their normal uni.
