I couldn't delete that abomination from my DVR fast enough

Turnovers: Our senior guards, supposed to be the strength of the team, were destroyed by high pressure defense. We were literally just giving them the ball. 29 turnovers? Wow.

Defense: non-existent.

Defensive rebounding: must have forgotten that whole boxing out thing.

Offense: what?

Afam: I was very excited to see him in action. He looked like a lost puppy. I sure hope he learns from this. Complete lack of confidence.

Bottom line: Let's just forget this ever happened. Deal?

Is anyone really surprised by this game? NO!!! We have played one of the weakest schedules in the country and have a young team. Coach Schroyer well what did you expect? At best we will finish middle of the pack in the MWC, in fact we could start out conference play 0-3. With games on the road at Utah & UNLV and at home for SDSU.

Don't get me wrong I love the pokes and want to see them win but am a realist too!!!

Speaking of which when McClain was here wasn't the complaint that our offense would just stand around and then play one-on-one basketball? Well what does Schroyer's offense look like too? Same crap and can we please come up with some inbounds plays? How hard is that? Really it is the same one every time and by the third conference game it will not work and it will be throw it out to half court. Take some lessons from Coach Joe, or one of the other conference coaches.

I am chalking this effing mess up to these things:

1. Biggest road game of the season
2. Best OOC opponent of the season
3. Best opponent period of the season
4. We are young...both playing & coaching
5. Our level of competition to prepare us up to this point was a joke
6. Some ahole on another message board predicted we would win
7. Once we got down...it was all over

Hopefully the team can take a lot away from this game...and grow into a decent team in conference. UCLA isn't the #10 team in the country because of luck.

But Schroyer was the defensive genius that got us to the NCAA's and won the game against Gonzaga! Truth is he is no more of a defensive mastermind than McClain was. Maybe it had something to do with John Adams back then.
As for the offense, I do not see anything different than we have had for the last 10 years or so. 4 guys on the 3 point line trying to create their own shot. Where are the screens and set offensive plays that we heard Schroyer would install? Still playing playground basketball.
Bottom lines is Schroyer is not much of an improvement for game coaching. I will give him credit for straightening out the academic mess but we have a long ways to go to be competitive on the court.

Say again when football season starts?

Football? Not sure about that! When does UW golf start up again...at least we have a chance of our low expectations being realistically met, all the while knowing that admission is free.

Like I said when I watched the first game of the season looks like 5 players looking for an ESPN highlight. No floor leader like Bailey used to be. Thought maybe we had a bench leader but can't see that either. I am not so sure I buy the lack of experience excuse but if they ever decide to play hard and as a TEAM for 60 minutes we'll have a winner.

About the offense:

The core of our offense is 4 out 1 in motion, so although set plays will be called from time to time, the fundamentals of motion basketball are essentially freelancing. You have rules (cardinal one being: you can't receive the ball unless you've worked for it vis a vis a cut, coming off of a screen of some sort, rolling/popping from a screen you've set, etc.) So it doesn't bother me that we aren't running a bunch of set plays in the flow of the game - that's not the offense, and this offense is the backbone of many extremely successful coaching careers - Coach K, Lute Olsen, Rick Majerus, and Bob Knight, to name a few. What did bother me last night is that as a squad we were totally unable to adjust to the increased pressure on the perimeter - UCLA ramped it up, we had no answer, and it was curtains. No increased focus on getting the ball inside, no pick and roll, and no dribble penetration (Brandon was the only player who could beat his man off of the dribble - that's impressive considering the caliber of player guarding him, but the rest of our squad couldn't get anywhere near the paint).

Also, well-coached teams score coming out of timeouts - that's the number one set play time. I can't count how many times we came out of timeout and turned it over five seconds into the shot clock. That's poor execution and lack of poise in my book.

We didn't lose by 20, or even 30. That's a 50 pointer. It reminds me of when Joby took us into Cincinati and we lost 51-101. Bottom line: this guy can't coach or recruit. We don't have 1 guy in the 3,4, or 5 position who can rebound or play defense. Interior passing is nonexistant. No boxing out and no hand in the face of the jump shooters. Same as last year. Waddell might turn into something but you can send the rest packing. I feel sorry for Ewing. He should have left when he had the chance.

I wrote it last year and I'll write it again: We have our own Dale Layer. Look for us in the play in game again this year.

I am not gonna say I told you so....but....

Schoyer will fair no better here than he did at Portland, where, I might mention, he did NOT have a winning record as a head coach, and only had 1 winning season. This is Burmans buddy, so all the big time basketball fans, you might try to find a stress relieving activity to make it through the season. You get what you pay for.
