Hunter Thompson

I think Wyoming has an attitude problem. I know lots of "Wyoming fans" that do nothing but talk shit about how much we suck. We should talk about how to get better instead of how much we suck. I wouldn't be surprised if there was plenty of people around hunter talking shit about Wyoming. UW is a fine school
“They just have an incredible fan base and I can’t imagine there’s a better feeling than playing in front of 15,000 fans every game.”

Judging by that comment, the fan bases were the key reason he chose Creighton. I'm sure comments like "I hope he fails miserably" and "fuck him" only reinforce his decision to leave the state.

This is lax and I are talking about. Do you think if Creghton loses a recruit to Iowa State (just to use an example) that their fans go "oh, well they are better than us anyway, no wonder he wouldn't want play here"?

Spoiler alert: No they wouldn't. They would make derogatory comments about Ames, accuse ISU of cheating and possible throw in some sexual references involving farm animals.

I am hardly the biggest homer on this board, but I believe playing basketball for Larry Shyatt at the University of Wyoming is a great opportunity. It is disappointing that many on here, and Hunter Thomopson, do not.
+1

I think it's important to remember that we're not talking Creighton University, perennial Missouri Valley Conference heavyweight. We are talking Creighton University, perennial (post-realignment) Big East Conference competitor. That is a basketball conference that is miles better than the MWC. If Creighton was still in the MVC, I don't know that we lose Thompson to them, and the decision becomes way more questionable. He gets to go play Villanova, Xavier, Georgetown, etc. twice a year and be in contention for an at-large NCAA bid every year.

Very true Duck, I remember a couple tweets from Thompson being in awe of the prospect of playing against some of the above schools. Meanwhile, the MW was dogshit this year.

Makes one wonder if Shyatt told Hunter he would be stepping down if that had any bearing on the decision??

The reverse. He couldn't land hunter so he packed it in

Wyoming kids are more likely to have a longer memory than kids who probably watch and listen to other schools while in elementary. That said, Creighton was a Missouri Valley school just a couple years ago. Even with the better basketball history, they are still in the shadow of Nebraska-Lincoln and Iowa State. They are not over our head.

I will say that the "good riddance" attitude on this board is toxic for our ability to recruit. If we can't do some serious self-examination and continue to blame coaches and players without asking ourselves about our own institution we will never get over the hump.

Uh... Creighton has never once been compared to Iowa State, and Nebraska is one of the only power conference schools besides Northwestern to have never won in the NCAA tourney. Wyoming and Creighton are in no way comparable programs. You're clearly in denial about something.

Let's be honest Creighton guy:

Creighton:

Tourney Appearances: 19
Sweet Sixteens: 3
National Championships: 0

Wyoming:

Tourney Appearances: 15
Sweet Sixteens: 1
National Championships: 1

I wouldn't say they are in no way comparable.

I don't know that that is a fair comparison Loco.

That's like saying that because Minnesota has won 7 national championships, they are a football powerhouse...except their last championship was in 1960 (and 1941 before that).

Of Creighton's 19 tourney appearances, 10 have come since 1999. Of Wyoming's only 2 have come in that time frame.

Since 1970, Creighton has had 16 of their 19 trips to the Dance, Wyoming has only had 6 of their 15.

I'm not saying that Wyoming doesn't have a great historical program; IMO easily more storied than Creighton's. But one can't simply use this data to say at this time we are a comparable program, a bit misleading.

You can say the recent histories aren't comparable, but that's not what he said. I am also not objecting to the fact that as a basketball program they are superior at this time and slightly superior overall. I am just objecting to the language that was used. No one is delusional, and the overall histories are comparable.

Historically, I absolutely agree with you. If we were talking state of the program as it sits today (which I now realize you weren't), then I would say Creighton is sitting better than Wyo.

P.S. Hunter...who?

This is very true. I think a lot of people say we can't recruit and then their answer to that problem is to drop to a lower division. I think both of those ideas are stupid. I think we can recruit ( we were really close to getting Hunter and still might who knows) and I think we really can compete. Maybe I am delusional but I truly think we can compete in the Mtn West. I think we need to be creative with some things but I think we can do it. I have no ideas right now on what needs to change because I am not in nor will I ever be in the athletics department. Tom Burman has to dig in and do a root cause analysis and talk to his department ( including coaches all the way down to the lowest staff member) and his Boss to come up with solutions and not the same solutions we have used since 1988.

This is why we should not bad-mouth kids who initially choose to go another direction. If we mistreat people now, there is always the chance that we do not see a repeat of Bryce Meredith or (from a much earlier era) John Burrough.

Personally, I have always been and will always be a Wyoming fan. That applies to UW and to our own high school products that go elsewhere.
