My curiosity was piqued when Hunter Thompson, an apparent 2017 WYO recruit from Pine Bluffs, was mentioned in several recent tweets. Below is a story on Hunter for those who may be interested:

Hunter Thompson receives recognition from scouts (Pine Bluffs Post)

A Pine Bluffs Hornet has received a lot of recognition from top basketball officials for his knowledge and love for basketball as he begins his sophomore season on Dec. 1.

For the past few months, Hunter Thompson has been practicing for his next high school basketball season. He has been going to open gym and plays with the Wyoming Flight team in Cheyenne. Thompson was also invited to the West Coast Elite Basketball Showcase on Nov. 1, in Salt Lake, Utah.

About 200 kids were invited to the basketball showcase. Thompson said all the players who were invited were evaluated into the top 40s and 20s and played games based on their ranking. Thompson made the top 20 all-star game. Several scouts and reporters including Joel Francisco, an ESPN college scout, and Frank Burlison, 2005 U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Famer, were present to watch the players.

Along with ESPN's Joel Francisco, Frank Burlison is another hoops writer who follows top talent at these camps. Here are Burlison's comments on Thompson from the WCE Utah camp:

"Isaiah Barnes (6-7/Hyrum Mountain Crest) was the best of the 2017 “bigs” from Utah at the camp, which also got some extra frontcourt juice by the visits of Hunter Thompson (6-9/Pine Bluffs in Wyoming) and Matt Mitchell (6-5/Eastvale, CA, Roosevelt).

Thompson showed off the kind of footwork and low-post efficiency you rarely see in a player that size that has yet to play a “real” game as a high school sophomore – including a left-handed jump hook in the lane (he’s a righty)."

I guess we better start following this WYO kid.

He's a good kid, and has busted his ass to get where he's at. His dad was my high school basketball coach. Hunter used to come practice with us when he was just a little dude. He'd be doing ball handling drills with the guards at the beginning of practice.

With Wyoming, CU, Utah and Utah State already communicating with Hunter, his dad must be doing a nice job with him. Sounds like Hunter already has good footwork and some size (weight-wise). And being able to jump hook with either hand is a plus.

Looking forward to following his progress.

Mission #1 every year has to be to keep the instate talent in state. If there are kids good enough to go play at other D1 schools, they should be in Laramie. There are no excuses for them not to be.

Check him out on Hudl. I'm not sure if the highlights are freshman year or the start of this season but he has incredible skill for a young kid with size. He could play small forward if he gets quicker over the next few years.

Any direct links to his videos?

A snippet from Tom Lacock's story on Hunter over on GWG:

"The 6-foot-9, 225-pound Thompson said he has been offered scholarships by Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona State, and has been in contact with coaches from Utah State, Stanford, Gonzaga and Cal to name a few."

He mentioned that his goal is to play for Kansas, but Wyoming has a "high chance" of landing him.

Another good article from Lacock.
