I like the Hughes kid and would love for him to succeed. That said, he sucks. Don't get me wrong, our OL is terrible, our WR can't catch, and our running game is non-existent - but at what point do you sit the kid? Is Simms still hurt? He seemed ok last year before he got injured.

Other than constantly missing open receivers, making terrible decisions in the read option, and throwing interceptions at the worst possible times and specifically in the red zone - I'd say Hughes has been a great get.

He is probably pressing because he wants to win and the team around him is terrible

The W&M fans I talked to before the season started were really spot on with their evaluation.

They said he was a bad passer and wilted in games against tough competition, even at the FCS level. They were suspect that his running ability would translate into success at the FBS level against faster/more athletic defenses. Pretty much exactly how things have played out.

During fall camp, I was hearing that Sims was outplaying Hughes.

Sims outplayed everyone last year. Outside of his injury, he was ballin'.
 
The thing about Sims is that he gets knocked down and keeps coming back. How many others would have hung it up by now? Dude is a warrior. He deserves a shot to lead the offense and see what he can do. We had the most success by far when he was leading the offense last year.

Hughes has a lot of Sean Chambers skill set. Glimpses of brilliance, ability to create on the ground and some very bad decisions/throws. I'd say Chambers>Hughes but comparable skill sets.
 
Hughes just did not see the open receiver a number of times or they suck at timing. He delayed then the CB or safety was able to close or WR ran out of grass on a crossing route. Ended up passing to a contested receiver or out of bounds. There was a post-pattern or two that were wide open for TD's had he seen them. There appears to be no chemistry between WR and QB. Lot of missed targets, too (balls too high).

Chambers was heads and tails better than Hughes, and it is not even close, in my opinion.

Chambers was way more elusive, had better acceleration, and a higher top end speed. The opposing defense needed to have someone account for Chambers on every single play. I have not been impressed with Hughes running/scrambling ability at all. Frankly, I would say it's below average for the QB position at the FBS level, and that was supposed to be his strength.

I loved Sean Chambers competitiveness but he had zero touch on his ball at Wyoming. Whether it was a dump off to the back or a seam route to a tight end, he always felt the need to throw the ball as hard as he could. Ultimately, in his 2 years of starting at Wyoming, he had 43% and 50.8% completion percentages.

I therefore cant say conclusively that Chambers is heads and shoulders better than Hughes. Chambers does appear to be a better runner and that is why I gave him the edge.

Chambers had the luxury of a real coaching staff and a stout defense. I don’t think Chambers is anything but 1-2 with this current clown show of a football program.

Simms is a far better runner than Hughes
 
I'll admit that I had quit watching Wyoming football by the time Sims got some playing time last year, so I have no opinion on his skill set. However, I've heard from multiple people with at least some inside knowledge of the program that he was the top performer in fall camp at the QB position.

If true, this seems like just another case of Sawvel making a personnel decision way before any real evaluation had taken place. At least this time he at least gave lip service to an "open competition".

Wyoming never hiring a real QB coach during that timeframe was baffling to me. Peasley had Polasek which more than likely helped him
 
Before Chambers got hurt, he was a dangerous runner. He damn near ran through the entire Missouri a couple of times. When he first took over from Van derwahl, we were 2-6. And he won the rest of his starts. He was pretty good for the beginning of the next year also. But like a lot of Wyoming qb's, they show promise and then got worse. It's almost like the coaching dragged them down instead of improving.
In Bohl's entire tenure, the only qb that improved from 1 year to the next was Peasley.
