Huge Hire!

Mayday

Has to be either Larry Shyatt (1) or Billy Gillespie (2) in my opinion. Burman absolutely cannot get this one wrong...

GO POKES!

Bring Back Bucky MAC!!!!

Ok I know it is a reach but maybe??? Well I think we can find someone good. I would like Shyatt back or how about Charles Bradley?

We need Joe Dooley, Reggie theus, Jeremy Cox, or Billy G. If not those four bring back Mac.

My top two would be Dooley or Gillespie.

Please no Rice from BYU (anyone from that school fucking sucks).

Indeed this is going to be a Huge Hire! However, for me as a basketball fan it won't make that much difference as I am done attending UW men's basketball games. But for UW's fan base this hire better be right.

Why would Mac be mentioned by some of you as a potential next hire? Not going to happen. The AD couldn't possibily admit he was wrong in firing Mac and then from what I hear from Mac's and Kim's standpoint, Steve's firing may have been tied into more of a vendetta than performance issues. From I have heard Burman turned down a request for a tutor or academic adviser for the basketball team and also that Steve was on the committee for selecting the next AD and that he was against Burman being brought back as AD.

Has always baffled me that so many fans thought Mac was a bad coach. Real strange that he had such good luck to win a national champtionship at the Junior College level and then even more luck to win conference titles (not once but twice) and also was lucky to be named the conference coach of the year. Also was lucky enough to beat Self (when he was at Tulsa) and Few (Gonzaga) and make it into the NCAA's. Yep, one heck of a lucky guy but apparently no coaching ability!

Unfortunately we will never know, but I would be willing to put up a pretty hefty bet that Mac with the schedules we have seen for UW Men's basketball the past few years that he would have been a twenty or more game winner (again just luck) in at least three of our last four seasons.

Problem with some of the names being thrown out there is, if he (whoever he may be) is successful is he going to stay around here? If he should be successful and happen to look at some other opening the fan base will immediately jump all over him because he obviously is only using the place as a stepping stone to something better; although it has been said that often a successful coach will do that to sort of get an increase in the salary from his current school. Admittedly there are some coaches who have a couple or few schools in mind that they would love to coach at and will try to get into that school no matter how successful they may be at the school they are currently at.

Schyatt is getting a bit old. How old is he now?

Mac was also using Wyo as a stepping stone. He sought a different job right after the NCAA win.

A coach who wins here and gets us to the NCAA and then leaves is sure better than where we are now frankly. I can see much worse things happening than that.

"Mac was also using Wyo as a stepping stone. He sought a different job right after the NCAA win."

You may be right. But as I pointed out some coaches have a couple or few schools they would love to coach at. As I recall, although I may be mistaken on this, was not Mac looking at Iowa or Iowa State after that NCAA win? Mac and his top assistant, John Adams, both were Iowa boys (Steve from Orient and John from Milford). Maybe there was some sort of mystic for Steve at Iowa or Iowa State; I don't know. Have to admit that I am biased as I liked watching his teams play. Had a feeling in watching them play that the players would have run through a cement wall if Steve had asked them to and that both they and Steve were going to be totally involved until the final buzzer.

Once again, the age old Wyoming fan fear of "being a stepping stone..."

If we're a stepping stone at least we are having success. Who cares. We aren't going to find someone in our next coach who's probably going to stick it out, because if he DOES turn the program around, he will be a pretty big coaching commodity for turning around lowly Wyoming.

How do you call yourself a fan after stating this? Unless I misunderstood you as a general basketball fan and not a Poke fan.

Cox +1

I watched him give the commencement address when my cousin graduated from meeteetse high...this is a red blooded wyoming guy

in his speech he talked about burman brushing him off for the job that HS filled and how all he wanted to do was coach DIV 1 basketball and how doing it in wyoming would be all that much sweeter! could you imagine how much recruiting would be helped if the head coach actually enjoyed living in laramie?

cox is my guy

I think Mike Dunlap would be the homerun hire Burman needs to make. Currently at St. John's under former UCLA Coach Steve Lavin. St. John's has been making some noise on the east coast this year. He was extremely successful at Metro State winning a couple national championships. (I realize Joe Glenn had a similar resume.) He's been an associated head coach at Arizona and Oregon so he knows the west. He's relatively yoiung at 53. He would be a great get.

Jememy Cox should at least get an interview. He could be the guy that would not be inticed away from UW if he was successful. I don't know that for sure however. My one concern is that he hasn't even been an associate head coach at the D-1 as far as I know.

All that being said. I still think Dunlap, if interested would be the pick.

Throw the money at Gillespie and he will come. Minimum of 2 years before we make the big dance with him at the helm. Of course, he will likely be gone after that, but I don't really give a shit.

THIS!!

Vermonts coach, Mike Lonergan. 354-147 in 17 seasons. 122-65 currently in his 6th year at Vermont. He also only makes about 110K a year...Maybe?

Reports are Wyo upped the ante for the coaching salary to $160,000 for the next head coach, Granted I don't know where that falls in line but it's more then HS was getting.
