How much development do you expect?

There has been much self proclamation of a developmental program now in place at WYO. Last year, most of our problems were chalked up to being the youngest (or nearly so) team in the nation. Logic would dictate then that we should see substantial leaps forward if we are truly a developmental program, right?

We all know how "challenged" certain units were that played a lot of young guys. The dogma was that they were just too young. Well, now, they have more experience than many Juniors do (in CFB).

So, do you think we see a substantial leap forward, especially on defense, because the inexperienced is now experienced?
 
I think the defensive secondary will make a substantial jump. Also the O line should continue to improve. Other than that I'm not expecting leaps and bounds from anyone
 
I expect improvement in all areas. That includes a better pass rush than we've seen in the past couple seasons. All positions return depth except for DE...but the DE's have better ability to get after the QB (Granderson and Prosser only at this point until we see the JC guy). All reports out of camp suggest the QB pressure is much improved.

QB - improvement over last year
RB - improvement with Wick back in the mix
TE - improvement due to size and experience returning
OL - improvement due to size and experience returning
DL - see above (we lose USO, but all returners and the newcomers are all bigger than last year)
DE - see above
LB - improvement due to size and experience returning
DB -improvement due to size and experience returning
K - should be hard to see improvement (the kicker out of Colorado has a huge leg).

I just don't see any area were we see a drop off. Overall team size is improved and we return all but a handful of starters.....and return some key guys who were injured last year.
 
I think that as long as the offensive line is better than the offense will be a lot better than it has been because every other area of the offense should be better. Better receivers, better running backs (both because of more experience) and the QB spot should be a major upgrade as well.

The defense will only be better if the defensive line is better than last year and I don't think it will be at this point. I do think the strength coach is doing a good job putting more weight on the guys. The linebackers and secondary will have more experience but the main problem that you can't forget is we still have the same DC and that will most likely be a major problem no matter what happens on defense. Stanard is terrible. So until he shows me something to make me believe in him I say the defense will be bad again. The secondary while it has more experience because of everyone playing last year is still very young. I think we will score more points but will give up a lot of points again. I expect this team will win 4 games possibly 5.

I would be careful with anyone getting your hopes too high on this team until they actually show on the field improvement by winning multiple games. Expecting a team that was almost the worst team in FBS last year to go to a bowl game this year I think is a leap of faith. If it happens then great but I don't see it at this point. So yeah there should be some improvement but a "substantial leap"? No I don't see a substantial leap happening.
 
There will be improvement simply because 2-10 is a really low bar. Young players will improve, but I won't assume anything in terms of big leaps. When Brett Smith and co. started 8-4 as youngsters, we assumed certain progressions would be made that did not occur. There are still glaring issues from a bad 2015 team that won't be fixed right away, and also a few injuries away from being awful at certain positions. That said, OL should be better along with the secondary making a big leap. I think WR will improve with more depth this fall.

I think they'll be better, but no significant leaps. This isn't the payoff year.

Probably a good reason why DC isn't a head coach anymore.

WR will improve simply because Tanner Gentry won't be hurt. He was one of the top receivers in the conference/nation last year before getting hurt. Luckily, we saw the emergence of James Price against UNLV. Still need some of the younger WR's to improve.....but there is talent in the mix.

I think we see improvement at all positions....but how much will determine how the season goes.

It seems like quite a few of us say this about every year. Since we were pretty much the worst team in FBS, I think we can now safely say it :lol:
 
I'm tempering my expectations simply because I have little faith in the DL and Stanard's ability to adapt and create pressure on the QB.

I expect literally every other unit to be better, though, and that should translate into more wins.
 
I'm looking for increased physicality, endurance and mental toughness. I'm not sure last year everyone bought into the program...esp. some of the guys left over from the prior administration, but those that went through this off season program probably have a better appreciation of what Bohl expects and also have a little more camaraderie with the shared experience. Cowboy tough...
 
From a production chart point-of-view, the two things I want to see improvement on are Sacks/ Hurries, and 3rd Down Efficiency. If there are two indicators that belied last season's futility, it was those two categories. Get pressure on the other QB's, get something out of our 3rd Downs, and we should see better results.

If I remember right, our 1st and 2nd down D wasn't too terrible but our 3rd down D was atrocious.

Our first play of the game D was atrocious. It feels like it was a guarantee we'd give up 20+yards on the first play every single game.

Our first play of the game D was atrocious. It feels like it was a guarantee we'd give up 20+yards on the first play every single game.

I believe individual units will improve (QB play, secondary, and Oline), some units will remain the same (WRs & linebackers. Running backs stay at a high level), and some units decline ( dline). I'll believe Bohl's teams's record improves when I see it. There are lot of missing pieces in my opinion to see major improvement in the record. I've been wrong before though and I hope to be surprised.

Missing pieces being unknowns in the kicking game, woefully undersized DEs and backers ( can the returning guys play every down at their weights), and can our game calling improve?

3rd Down production on both sides of the ball was barely existent.

Improvement on 3rd Down on both sides of the ball, and place-kicking production (especially scoring) will be the three biggest dashboard indicators to watch for improvement.

3rd Down production on both sides of the ball was barely existent.

Improvement on 3rd Down on both sides of the ball, and place-kicking production (especially scoring) will be the three biggest dashboard indicators to watch for improvement.

Agree about the 3rd down production on both sides of the ball. Those two areas along with red zone offense killed us. Our FG kicking was probably the worst in the nation, and kicking in altitude has been proven to be easier than sea level. I think with Josh Allen at Qb, he gives us a similar "Brett Smith type athlete ", but in a West coast offense. Having Wick back will help in red zone situations. He is a very productive red zone back. Also Maulhardt and Hollister are red zone nightmares for defensive teams with their height. Watching in Cheyenne right now and our Defensive Ends are bringing excellent pressure off the edge. Encouraged by what I see.

Yep that pretty much gets you a 2-10 team. The old saying "stats don't lie" seems to be pretty accurate.
