Honest Assessment of Week 1

Alright guys. I want to know everyone's honest assessment of our team after week 1.

Here's my take:

What a great feeling to see Cowboy Football again. I just have to get that out of the way first and foremost, since it's been an extremely long offseason.

Brett Smith- wow. I come away from every game I watch him play, more impressed every time. Talk about a diamond in the rough. Texas fans were JEALOUS of our QB and they have every right to be. He was the best qb on the field last night. That being said, there were times where the protection broke down (only one sack, however). When the protection broke down, he forced one bad pass and didn't get enough on his pass to mcneil. I won't whine about the McNeil pass...as I wish McNeil would have came back to the ball instead of letting it go up for grabs like that. I didn't like the forced ball deep, however. Coach DC won't be happy with that one on film today. DC has a lot more to be happy about, as should WYO fans. He made a 45yd perfect touch pass to Herron. What a way to silence 101K crowd on the road. I never felt like we were out of the game as long as Smith was in there until the 4th and 2. I think we come out as an improved team next week from our mistakes on offense. We weren't flawless. The chemistry between Smith and McNeil needs to get ironed out.

Robert Herron- I don't think any of us could have seen him torching that secondary the way he did. He really stepped up to the plate when we needed him and it's a shame he was hurt for that 4th and 2 to get it within a TD, because he was giving an elite ranked secondary fits the whole game. I hope he's ok to play next weekend so we can have him against Toledo.

Luke Ruff- All I can say is "WHAT WAS THAT?!!!" That had to be the worst game he's ever played in Cowboy Uniform. On all of those big gains, he was getting ran over after not being able to make the tackle. I know it's not fair to make comparisons, but I kept thinking...NO WAY Prosinski or Wendling misses any of those tackles. I was feeling comfortable with him at safey, but not for run stopping in any way shape or form. That was embarrassing.

Brandon Miller- I feel like he was falling before getting hit...every play. Did he take a big hit early or something? Because he looked like he was shying away from contact and went down easy.

Special Teams- Shaun Wick...stop making freshman mistakes and taking the ball our of the endzone and barely making it to the 10 instead of taking a knee and starting at the 25yd line. That probably frustrated me the most about our special teams to see that. I'll give Gleeson a pass as this was his first game.

Offensively, I'd like to see us improve while establishing more of a rushing attack. I really get weary having to rely EVERY game on Brett Smith. Someone else needs to step up and make the runs we need. Granted, they were blitzing so much.

Defensively, I'm actually not too low on our D right now. We got excellent initial push from Purcell and the boys. That was encouraging. Also, I can't be mad at them for Texas having to pull out multiple trick plays. I just can't believe that from a team that has more talent to have to resort to trick plays. You hardly ever see that. I realize they have Boise's old OC...but STILL. Kinda pathetic to see that. It worked for them, but that seemed to be the only thing to really get a nice gain on us. All they did were dumpoffs and short routes. I wish they would have let Ash throw deep more on us because Blair Burns is a LOCKDOWN defender. I can't wait to see Burns play every week. Our pass coverage is exciting. Our run defense is improved and will have a better chance to show it. I believe we were worn down at the end of the night, when they were getting all of their runs (and running over Ruff)

Other than that, what did I miss?

I want to hear your thoughts.

I hope to see our Offense improve. I have no idea

Great write up. Really can't disagree with anything you said. Still think the rush defense could end up being a big deal, but we'll have to let the season unfold before judging.

I think you hit on something important with that above quote. It really seems like everything with the offense begins and ends with Brett. The running game was non-existent, and its hard to see it becoming great or even good this season from what was evidenced. His protection was iffy at best, and he had to make a lot of things happen himself. Its tough to expect a 19 year old kid to pick up the team and take them all the way to the promise land. If Brett happens to get hurt from running, getting sacked, or even overwhelmed by the massive load on his shoulders.....it could really derail this season.

Overall, I think that quote sums up Wyoming's 2012 season. They will go as far as a 100% healthy Brett Smith takes them. Whether he plays well or not.

The D was holding their own until they gave up points, Brett threw a quick pick and then they gave up points and Brett threw another quick pick. Those picks were not very good throws either. But how can I be mad at smith he played a heck of a game. Herron was the man and Mcneil and Rufran compliment him well. We have 3 very solid wide outs. The running game is an issue, hopefully that gets sured up and Ruff yeah, he struggled bad. But Burns looked like a STUD he was killing it out there. When texas ran that reverse and he bit and still hit the reciever force a drop was impressive. He got burnt a couple times but his speed recovered. SPEED KILLS

you'll give Gleason a pass but not wick?

Wick easily killed our drive before it started 3 different times. He should have known better. Gleeson is an australian football player...converted to american. I have to give him a pass. Besides, he only really had one bad punt that was borderline blocked. I can't give Wick a pass. He probably shouldn't have been out there anyway. You have to know that a touchback is a 25 yd deal now. He would barely get to the 10 when he decided to take it out. I can't let that slide.

Took the words right out of my mouth! If Wicks would have done it once to test the coverage and then taken the touchbacks after i could see giving him a pass. But the fact that he kept doing it over and over made my teeth cringe everytime i seen him run it out. Maybe it would work with a different team and i hope it does, but not with that texas team. He should have known better...

Also to add, i believe it came up once during the broadcast that i seen, that the wyoming average starting point was our own 14.

My take he looked rusty, both of those Ints were ill-advised passes not sure what he was thinking but I came only assume he was trying to do more then he should have.

Robert Herron- I don't think any of us could have seen him torching that secondary the way he did. He really stepped up to the plate when we needed him and it's a shame he was hurt for that 4th and 2 to get it within a TD, because he was giving an elite ranked secondary fits the whole game. I remember last year a lot of really bad down talk about Herron and I always thought he was strong I'm happy he had such a great day I hope they continue. I also hope Smith and McNeil get the cob webs off or w/e needs to be done.

Luke Ruff- All I can say is "WHAT WAS THAT?!!!" That had to be the worst game he's ever played in Cowboy Uniform. On all of those big gains, he was getting ran over after not being able to make the tackle. Can't blame Luke for everything that the defense failed on.

Brandon Miller- I feel like he was falling before getting hit...every play. Did he take a big hit early or something? Because he looked like he was shying away from contact and went down easy.

Miller took a number of good hits, I think Sutton should have been moved up the depth charts or Wick should have been given more touches. Once they keyed in that Miller was our only runner they made a mess out of any run play.

Wick only brought 2 Balls out of the end zone one to the 10 and one to the 16, While the one to the 10 hurt the most the bigger question is why was the kick return defense that sad.

I absolutely thought Texas would crush us and they didn't. And I still think that Texas is a good team that deserves their ranking. So, my honest assessment would have to be that I am happy. But I also see some problems.

Brett played really well and this entire season will come down to him being on the field, as J-Rod said. Whether he plays good or bad his presense is needed. Plus he just seems to be one of those guys that can beat you even if he doesn't have a good game. This game was far from perfect. He threw a couple INT's and almost half of his yards in the air came on two plays. But if Texas is as good as they are advertised, I'd give Brett an A-/B+. It always felt like he was going to make something happen.

The running game needs to help. It doesn't need to be stellar (although that would be nice), just get a few more yards to keep the defenses honest. It always felt like nothing was going to happen.

Because of Herron's heroics, it was a pretty good showing by the receivers. McNeil will get back in sync with Smith, especially if other teams start worrying more about Herron. One big threat makes it easier for the rest of them and we may have one.

Special teams need to improve and I believe they will. I give Gleeson a pass, given the situation. His performance wasn't due to bad decisions. I believe he wanted to whack the ball, but had the emotion of his first game ever, combined with the opponent, who could have done better? His first three punts averaged less than 30 yards. But he ended up with a respectable 37+average, mostly due to Texas letting his last two punts roll, but whatever, it saved a potential disasterous first game. With Wick, I have to give a pass as well. Mostly because he's a freshman but also I can only imagine he was being told to run by the coaches. If he was told not to and he did, and they still kept him in, then shame on them. And Martin gets a pass even though his kick offs averaged less yards than the Texas punter. Once again, I have to assume there was some kind of strategy for the seemingly bad kick offs, or why would they leave him in? We threw these 3 true freshmen into a trial by fire for their first game and they performed poorly overall. With field position so vital in every game we need these guys to step up and I believe they can. The coaching staff should have had them better prepared.

Defense as a whole did pretty well, once again considering who they were up against, combined with some bad field position to defend. I don't think we'll see another team get this many rushing yards on us, or even close to this. We held their passing in check. There were a lot of completions, but nothing long, all short stuff. It would be nice to see a little more pressure on the QB.

Now if Texas does turn out to be a fraud ala' two years ago, then we are not as far along as I think we are. To me this doesn't feel like the case. If we stay healthy, everyone that is, because I still don't see the depth on this team, I'm still feeling 10-2.

I was only saying the wick thing to play devil's advocate... I agree trust me... He killed us

Smith and Mcneil seemed to have gotten crossed up a couple times in the game

On Brett's two picks...

The first was a good ball. I think it was McNeil that split the corners and was wide open when Brett threw the ball. It was the Texas safety, Vaccaro, that came out of nowhere to pick off the pass. Watching the replay, you could see he caught the back half of the ball. It was a hell of a play I don't think we pin that one on Brett.

The second one was an obvious brain fart....

Can you blame Wick? Not really. That is a Special Teams coaching problem mainly, in my opinion. DC himself might have to take over personally if Special Teams results don't improve. My other gripe is McNeil. He didn't seem prepared at all.

Only listened on radio so only have Dave and Kevin's assessment, but I'm thinking we'll be just fine, and we'll truly see Brett's true potential this weekend against Toledo, y'all come out if you can cuz we're building something special here!!! GO POKES

Wasn't McNeil double teamed the whole game? pretty tough to beat double team from "future NFLers".

Overall I wasn't disappointed with our effort, I do think they will make some adjustments to the special teams and we will see some major improvements. Gleeson has never played organized football before but we know he can punt the ball a mile. Give the kid a few games to get used to the speed of the game, Texas is a huge "welcome to college football" and I can see how he wouldn't do well right away. I wouldn't be surprised to see Stewart Punting if he doesn't get it together in practice this week though. The defense will be alright, and I don't blame out safety for having a difficult time tackling a running back the size and speed of the texas backs. They were amazing! I do hope that we get our kicking return game going in the right direction and fast.

I think we will be pleasantly surprised by the improvement in week two.

i think we need to remember this....

i don't think in aussie rules you have a mess of 250 lb dudes coming down on you when you punt and it looked as though texas was using that fact to try and rattle him a bit.......he'll find his groove
