Hey all,
Just stopping by to say hello and that I'm looking forward to our game next weekend. I won't be making the trip (in college, no money, etc.), but you can expect A LOT of Husker fans to be at this game Saturday. Generally speaking, we travel better than just about any fan base in the nation. One of the more memorable occasions was when we blanketed Notre Dame stadium in the early 2000's. For every one Irish fan there was probably one Husker fan in that stadium.
Regardless, I'll let you know a little about our team. We're very young on both sides of the ball this year, except for the defensive line. As far as personnel goes, we SHOULD have one of the best d-lines in the country. Unfortunately, they've been playing sub-par this year. My guess the new conference plus all the pre-season hype got to their domes a bit.
On offense, we have a lot of talented young guys with tons of potential, but the keyword here is young. We have three players of sophomore status or younger starting on the offensive line, one senior WR (the rest are sophomore or younger), one junior running back (Burkhead - he's a great back, expect to see a lot of him) and the rest are freshman. You probably have heard a lot about Martinez, and he's playing better this year, but he's still be susceptible to turning the ball over. Did well against Washington, though.
Defensively, we're struggling without our prized cornerback Alfonzo Dennard (suffered a pretty bad muscle tear in fall camp). However, he's probably going to see playtime this weekend. As I said earlier, our defense has played far below expectations, and for a Pelini defense this is uncharacteristic. But we had to change our defense this year because of the changes in offenses the Big 10 presents. We don't primarily run our signature Peso defense anymore, therefore our linebackers (whom never saw a lot of PT) are now playing a lot. And with the exception of potential all-american Lavonte David, they've been playing far below where they should be. Even he has had his mis-steps.
On special teams, we lost the most accurate kicker in college football history (Alex Henery) but we had a good back-up in waiting in Brett Maher. He's perfect on the season so far, and his first collegiate field goal this season was a 47-yarder. We have the second best return man in the country (Ameer Abdullah), who is averaging 42.5 yards-per-return right now and has one touchdown. Unfortunately for us, he tweaked his ankle against Washington. I don't know what his status is other than Pelini saying it's not a big deal. I'm hoping he's back and ready, but we won't know until Saturday.
As far as predictions go, I don't want to get off on the wrong foot just yet! You guys are undefeated, so that's something a lot of teams can't say right now. However, I think Nebraska has more talent on the football field and will have this one over by the fourth.
Anways, hope the altitude doesn't do much to our boys! Thanks and GBR
