Maybe everyone already knows, but this is the University of No. Dakota, not No. Dakota St. - where Bohl came from. Other than that, I don't have a dog in this fight.
I'm going to derail this thread. North Dakota still has no name after their Sioux issue. They allowed the public to have their say in what the new name should be. The responses were hilarious. This was printed on the university website and all.

"Abdominal Snowmen - Because fuck it why not, it's basically the north pole there."
LOL A lot of them wants the university to keep the Fighting Sioux nickname just to shove it up the NCAA's rear end.
I think most of you know I have my bachelor's from UND and I am from North Dakota. My master's is from Wyoming. I'm going to Laramie for the game with UND gear. My first loyalty is to my undergrad. You won't see any smack from me on this game. I'll cheer UND, but I am not delusional enough to believe they are going to win. And I won't be sad if/when UND loses. It's all good, I get to go to Memorial and see my two schools compete.
It's getting pretty crazy up north with the nickname issue. The NCAA has forced their hand and they need to change the nickname. In the meantime, Florida State gets to let a white guy dress in warpaint and throw down a spear in the middle of the football field while a bunch of rubes do a "tomahawk" chop and a war chant. We never did any of that at UND, but apparently we were "racist". The NCAA is one screwed up institution.
Well, I digress.
But, the "unintended consequences" of changing that name are really biting them in the butt. The big list of submitted names was released in a demonstration of transparency that the firm the brought on board to guide the process said was necessary. It probably was...if you don't show what was suggested, then more nut jobs will come out of the closet stating that they never had their say. Got to admit, a lot of them were pretty funny.
There are those who want the Fighting Sioux name to stay so they can act tough with the NCAA. That's not realistic. The NCAA is > UND. You want to play, you go along with the name change. There are those who don't want a nickname, so the de facto name would remain "Fighting Sioux". Again, not realistic. Eventually a name will be chosen to make sure that the Fighting Sioux name is buried.
So, now they pare it down to a "vote", which will probably be non-binding. The reality is that a new nickname will be chosen by a committee, and less than 50% of stakeholders will be unhappy no matter what name is chosen. The name they choose will be done int he best interests of the University. Whatever it is, I'm good with it.
Let's face it, if the NCAA said you could no longer be the Cowboys or you face heavy sanctions, all Hell would break loose in the state of Wyoming. Nothing less has happened in North Dakota with the loss of the Fighting Sioux nickname.
I want them to choose a new nickname ASAP and put this to rest.
My top three:
1. Roughriders (Teddy Roosevelt was in western North Dakota for a time and became the tough SOB he was because of it) North Dakota calls itself the Roughrider State. The top civilian honor in North Dakota is the Roughrider Award.
2. Nokotas. It's a breed of horse from North Dakota.
3. Flickertails. The old nickname. I like tradition. A Flickertail is the Richardson's Ground Squirrel, they are all over the prairie of North Dakota. North Dakota also calls itself the "Flickertail State".
Yup, I have all the Fighting Sioux gear I need for the rest of my life, but it's time to move on.
Go Sioux! (Or whatever they are going to be called) And go Pokes! ...after that game is over.
Okay folks, tear it up!
