HC Jay Sawvel Talks about the 2026 Football Season

Jay Sawful can kiss my ass. He will be stealing money from the university for 5 years. Everyone knows he is in way over his head.

I am pissed because this will be another season I won’t be attending any home games due to my intolerance for the ineptitude of the UW coaching staff. I refuse to give them my money and promote failure.

I feel a lot like you.

What's crazy is how immediately evident it was. It was made abundantly evident in his opening game against Arizona State. Yes, Arizona State was a very good football team that was much better than expected...but that Wyoming team would have struggled to beat Sheridan High School that night. I can't a recall a single other time I've seen a Wyoming football team lay down for a beating like that. The players had absolutely no response to getting punched in the mouth...zero fight in them. Sawvel walked the sidelines like a deer in the headlights - he looked confused and didn't have a single answer to the issues we were facing on the field.

I was so embarrassed for the entire State of Wyoming after that performance. Although I wasn't quite ready to admit it, I knew then that Sawvel was never going to turn that ship around.

I feel 100% this same way. I was so painfully and deeply embarrassed. Yeah, ASU was a good team. But there were many predicting an upset. Wasn't the first throw an interception? I recall someone texting me joking that the QB had completed more passes to ASU than to his own team. After all the talking I did...man did I learn a lesson. I've never seen anything like it.

I just watched the Wyoming/BYU WAC championship game. Wyoming's players (while making some mistakes) just plain looked tough as nails. They took it to the #6 ranked team in the country. Should've won that game.....

I was at the last BYU/Wyoming game and it wasn't a whole lot better. I've never forgiven Sawvel for how poorly prepared those teams were. But my god, that ASU game....

And he seems to be preparing for a loss to open the season at CSU. He told the team not to "let the outcome of one game define the season".

No, Jay. You HAVE to win that game. It's a rivalry game against a program that thinks it's better than you. What more motivation do you need? I don't give a shit about beating Northern Colorado or UTEP or NIU. Beat fucking CSU in their own place - no more damn excuses.

Having traveled there, with such high expectations...

Then comes the opening pick 6 from Svoboda, and Fuck Wyoming chants from their awesome student section, maybe one of the worst away games I have attended since the Vic days.

THIS x 1000000000

Yes, Jay, we know Burman fucked you, but you have had this game on the schedule for a year, with a whole spring, summer, and fall to prepare for it.

Here's my sleeper pick for perhaps the most unexcusable coaching performance by a Wyoming HC.

In front of an absolutely packed crowd on a stunning November day operating at max excitement because it was JOSH ALLEN JERSEY RETIREMENT DAY against a TERRIBLE Nevada team, Sawvel manages to bring out a team that is so flat they lose and only score 7 points. I mean, honestly it's impressive to take a team that had so much motivation to run through a wall that day, and make them play that terribly. Really something else.

Yeah, that was one of the more shocking losses I've ever seen. The weather was amazing, the place was packed, the vibes were insanely high.....and they laid an egg.

At least with the ASU game "there was some ass out there" or whatever the hell he said. That is three games right there...ASU, BYU, Nevada...that were just terrible. As I recall, we sucked bad against Colorado, too.

Worst team and coaching effort I have ever witnessed as well.

But there are two other games that come to mind to me when talking about being embarrassed:

1) 2016 56-35 loss against New Mexico. UNM rushed for almost 600 yards averaging 13 yards per carry. I still don’t know how that happened considering that Wyoming defense had about 7-8 guys that ended up with NFL playing time. If it wasn’t for Josh Allen, probably would have been 56-0.

2) 2011 Utah State over Wyoming 63-19 in a game where Wyoming was the favorite. Robert Turbin made the Wyoming front 7 look like middle schoolers.

A rivalry game against a program coming off a 2-10 season (should have been 1-11 but Northern Colorado got screwed by the refs on the last play of the game).

I actually sat about three seats from Craig Bohl at the ASU game. I thought he was going to pop a blood vessel!

I totally agree on the New Mexico game. I'm guessing that horrible defensive performance made Bohl fire Steve Stanard. It was like we only had 8 defenders on the field. In the same season, we gave up 70 to UNLV in a triple overtime game. That's back when UNLV was a laughing stock.
Regarding the Utah St. game - I can't argue with the result. That was back before Utah st. was in the MWC. But going forward, we went 5-2 in the conference and the only losses were TCU and Boise st.. So as bad as it was, the turnaround made the memory of that game a little less horrific.
From my memory, the most embarrassing loss was the 2007 game at Utah. Joe Glenn guaranteed a win and we lost 50-0. Joe's one finger salute to Utah's onside kick made national news and Wyoming football was a laughing stock for Joe's win guarantee.

This 100%.
ASU game as unimaginably bad, with the expectations for the Cowboy. And to get shut out until essentially the last play of the game was awful.
That being said, you cannot, under any circumstances, lose on Josh Allen day to anyone much less to 2-8 Nevada....like that with just 7 points...
