Hauck to UNLV

How does he do there?

UNLV is a big wild card next year, if Hauck is successful getting together a coaching staff and instilling his system they could be pretty good...especially considering they have a super talented QB named Omar Clayton.

I'm sad to see Hauck leave Missoula.. he was a winner here. UNLV.. just can't imagine how he'll do there.. he inherited a juggernaught here in Missoula... now he's got to rebuild a UNLV program who's teetering between falling off the face of the Earth and succeeding. I think I read where they haven't had a winning season since 2000. True?

Great news for UW!!

This may as well be called "Joe Glenn: The Sequal - Bobby Hauck Years"

If I was a UNLV fan, I would be pissed. They get to watch 5 more years of shit football, before making another change!

Bad hire for UNLV. The past two coaches at Montana coached to nation DIAA championships then went on to fail at the D1 level. As stated, Montana is a Juggernaut. Success at Montana obviously has not translated to success at the D1 level with the previous two guys. I doubt #3 will do better. I was really worried Franchione would get hired and the MWC would be in trouble. Sanford was a good coach and I don't think there was anything to get out of that team that he wasn't already getting. Its not like the Koenning group here where there was obviously poor coaching.

This is not a marriage made in football heaven in my opinion. Hauck probably felt that he had done just about everything he could at Montana (short of winning the National Title of course), and probably didn't feel like he would get another FBS head job offer. But he is going to a school that has continually been at the bottom of the conference and it is not because it hasn't had the talent at certain times, even though the way the talent got to UNLV was questionable as they had to take a lot of the California schools rejects. It is because there is really poor fan support in Vegas for the football and UNLV has not supported the football program like it has the basketball program. It appears that UNLV is pretty much a basketball school and I feel for Hauck because I feel that he took the wrong job, but it is his choice so he has to live with it.

UNLV has some talent, they have always seemed to lack fundamentals to me. If they got a guy who could get them I think they could go 6-6 next year. But UNLV lacks the commitment overall to football to ever challenge the top 4-5.

Got this off the MWCBoard, but Hauck would earn a 10K bonus for making the New Mexico Bowl. DC gets a 10K bonus for every MWC win. Shows a different level in commitment to winning football.

Found this on eGriz. A lot of people on eGriz seem to think Bobby didn't do much for upgrading his pay.. but this only lists what the university will pay him, not what boosters kick in.

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
New UNLV football coach Bobby Hauck agreed to an incentive-heavy three-year contract today that pays him an annual salary of $350,000.
Hauck, 45, receives $150,000 in base pay, $150,000 for media obligations and $50,000 for public appearances.
The contract also includes the following postseason incentives:
— $100,000 for making a Bowl Championship Series game
— $25,000 for the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas
— $20,000 for the Poinsettia Bowl
— $15,000 for the Independence Bowl
— $10,000 for the Armed Forces or New Mexico bowl.
Hauck also receives the following incentives for regular-season performance:
— $15,000 for 11 victories
— $12,500 for 10
— $10,000 for nine
— $7,500 for eight
— $5,000 for seven.
In addition, he receives a $10,000 bonus for appearing in a season's final coaches' Top 25 poll, $10,000 for being named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year, and $5,000 for an Academic Progress Report greater than 925.
UNLV will formally introduce Hauck, now the former coach at Montana, at a news conference at noon Wednesday at the Thomas & Mack Center's Board Room.
Hauck and Dennis Franchione, a former longtime coach, were the finalists. Hauck interviewed on Sunday and Franchione on Monday.

The advantage any FCS school has these days...also stems from FBS players quitting at that level, and being able to immediatly play at the FCS level (like Cory Orth for instance). Montana, as like many other schools, is fortified quite nicely from this. Has been for quite some time.

I think the NCAA needs to revisit this "guideline". If a scholarshipped athlete quits, at any level, to transfer to another school, they automatically lose a year of eligibility (and no using the redshirt).

They changed the rule a couple years ago to prevent senior dropdowns.. so a senior can't drop down for one year and move on (Eric Kresser moving from WA St to Marshall being the biggest high profile one).

Interesting. I didn't know about the change, but I get it, and completely agree with it. Maybe Lon Kruger's son had something to do with that change as well?

It seems like everyone wants to draw a comparison with Hauck and Joe Glenn..but there is a pretty big difference. Joe Glenn came from D2 football before going to MT, while Hauck was the recruiting coordinator under Neuheisel's CO and WA teams. Joe Glenn had ZERO experience at the FBS level. Hauck recruited and coached against the Big 12 and PAC 10. I think most of us agree that JG was a good coach but not a great recruiter. Neuheisel's teams were known for being able to recruit very talented players.

IMO, UNLV made a great hire. However, I agree with a lot of you that UNLV's committment to football needs to be questioned considering his financial package. A lot of his success will hinge on whether they are willing to pay to bring in some good coordinators.

That was a completely different rule that was also changed. Players who graduated from any school could transfer and play right away as a graduate student at another school.

I hope Hauck takes his whole staff with him.. we could really go for some fresh blood in Missoula. I would like to see the DC go with him especially. I'd be curious to see if Breske's interested in coming back.

Hauck said today that generating interest in UNLV football was #1 priority... good luck, Bobby.

its a good hire for srue now where does montana go?? Joe Glenn, Van Diest, who...
I'd say the best candidate right now is Robin Pflugrad. Current wide receivers coach for UM. Came over from Oregon this season. He's a damn good coach.

It'll be interesting to see what transpires.

IMO, the best candidate would be Bart Andrus, Dave Doeren, and ....? Glenn is not interested, said so himself today in the Missoulian. I hope it's not Van Diest. O'Day said there's 20-30 applications already in, some with pro experience, some asst's that are in bowl games right now.
