Great Burman Quote

Was looking for information about how much revenue an average home game makes for WYO and found this from our leader:

"What I’d like to do is look at the schedule and figure out, how can we go 2-2 at the worst and 3-1 at the best?" Burman said. "If we could get to that scenario, I’d be thrilled.”

:o I couldn't sum up any better why I question his leadership. Personally, I want someone that thinks we are 4-0 at our best.

He really put his foot in his mouth on that one lol.

For fuck sake, you just posted a quote from Burman that was related to last years OOC. The article was dated May of 2014. Because of that, I don't have a problem with what he said.

Go Pokes!!

For fuck sake, reading comprehension! He was talking about his SCHEDULING PHILOSOPHY and NOT the schedule that year. Because of that, I have a problem with what he said.

No coach in any conference at any level would say that and the AD is the last person that should say that. If you don't think, act and want to be the best you will always just settle.

That is the issue I've always had with not just Burman but the entire University and those that run it. They all settle for a mediocre product and never do anything to want more.

That is also why I was so happy when we got a new President that went straight for the throat on how mediocre we are and how bad it was that everyone just accepted it. There was a very small spark of light for a month and then it was gone. :(

This is probably one of those situations where what you say comes out differently than what you meant to say.

This is what he was referring to:

When asked to describe his ideal non-conference football schedule, Burman said he'd like to play one legitimate BCS team, two teams with similar quality to Wyoming and one FCS team in a home game.

The 3-1 is counting the legitimate BCS team as the loss. If he said we plan to schedule the legitimate BCS teams like the Alabamas and LSUs and beat them every year, he'd be criticized for being unrealistic and not understanding the current state of Wyoming football.

He isn't being criticized for being unrealistic at all he is being criticized saying he would be ok going 3-1. He should have said 4-0 is what we strive for and what we want to see on the field. It doesn't matter if it's realistic or not high expectations is what he should have.

I'd have to agree with this. I don't care who you are playing and if everyone and their mother KNOWS you are going to lose, you still don't admit that fact. As the figurehead of an athletic department and arguably the most publicly visible member of a university that isn't the President, a head coach or star athlete, you can't admit that you have no chance of winning. You don't have to go out and guarantee victory or anything, but you also can't say things like "3-1 at best".

I never said he was. Read again...

Yikes not a good look for Tom. Hopefully this was taken out of context or misspoken. Like someone said above, even if you know you're gonna get trounced, you plan for the win....

I have not been overly kind to Burman in past posts, but I think the quote is taken a bit out of context in terms of some of the comments. Sure, we want him to portray that we are a 4-0 school, and he probably should. But having served on another board with him recently, I will say that he has been great. In fact, he has been one of the more aggressive thinkers, especially concerning recruitment and retention efforts (in another area, not athletics) and he has been very assertive about his views and philosophy. They are pushing hard on bringing folks to the AA and War and have employed expertise to help. When we talk about the Pokes, he can be overly guarded and pessimistic about the challenges we face, but he is also thinking of ways and people to help address them. This said, I think he could be a lot more positive and reflect his vision in a more cohesive and rah rah sort of way. Moonlight at CSU was a turd in every regard, but he won the day and the hearts of their fans by laying out an exciting, aggressive and cohesive vision of CSU athletics. To this end, I think we need to be talking about the High Altitude Center and other efforts a lot more and in the context of building and maintaining excellence. If Osborne was involved, they should have his happy butt and face quoted and shown with it, particularly when Bohl goes to recruit Nebraska. But Burman is only the tip of the iceberg at UW...think of the hundreds of millions of dollars in facilities and other investments in that place...and look at the outward facing image the institution portrays. Little has changed in the latter regard since I received my packet to attend in 1994...despite serious coin falling all over the place.

Obviously I have not been a big supporter of Burman, but I think he just didn't phrase this the way he wanted to. Not a big deal IMO.

He knows exactly what he's doing.

Set mediocre as the high bar, if he doesn't meet it he gets a slap on the wrist. If he exceeds, contract extension and bonus.

Set anything above mediocre as the high bar and we have a bad year in football/bball, he's fired. He does mediocre, he gets a slap on the wrist and anything short of regular conference championships he'll be let go after a few years.

Ugh. We could literally do a weekly post of this type of shit from the Athletic Department at UW, and never repeat ourselves. Some of it, makes me cry so hard I start laughing.

Knowing you only from this message board (and some time on the other), I don't think you honestly believe that. Tom isn't stupid (he is many other things, but not stupid), he knows what he said. What is worse though, is that he believes in his heart what he said - and what he says.
