Grass turf?

I see that Nebraska is going back to grass turf after next season - the first grass field in Memorial Stadium since 1969.

Do you suppose Wyoming will ever go back to grass? I’m not up on the injury comparisons between fake and real grass - but I am hearing that many schools are reconsidering their previous choices.

I hope not. Grass doesn’t work in Laramie in November.

Grass is tough in Laramie in October & November - and certainly if we ever play in December at home again. When cold, it is like playing on cement.

Non-contact injuries are significantly less likely on a natural grass field compared to artificial turf. There is lots of data out there now to support this conclusion.

Even in a cold weather climate like Laramie, a natural grass field can still be well maintained, but it takes LOTS of money to do it. My guess is the UW athletic department does not have the budget to properly maintain a natural grass field.

I'm on the board of Municipal Utility District that oversees infrastructure for 38 residential neighborhoods including thousands of single family homes and multiple apartment complexes. We maintain two large community swimming pools, multiple parks, and a walking/running trail system. We also maintain all water delivery systems in the area. Any guesses as to our single largest line item on our budget? It's the three natural grass soccer fields that we maintain year round. Those three natural grass fields account for nearly 40% of our annual budget.

If Wyoming had Walton family money they could be like the Broncos and just replace the turf when it starts looking iffy towards the end of the season.

When most grass fields are in good climates, I would agree. As someone else mentioned, by November with frozen ground, I'd be surprised if those advantages still held for natural grass.

I keep thinking about the ice bowl game - Green Bay v. Dallas- and how Green Bay tried to keep the field from freezing with an underground heating system. My recollection was it looked like they were playing on an ice rink.
