Grand Canyon joining the MW this season

I don't understand why the WAC isn't suing GCU?

In basketball they have made 4 of the last 5 NCAA tournaments. They lost most everybody last year, but have built such a quality program and may win the conference in year 1. I think they were already paying players directly as a for profit institution. They have 100,000 students (counting online). Doing a side by side comparison, they are everything Wyoming isn't -- huge enrollment, urban environment, lots of sunshine, for profit, rapidly moving up in the modern world of college athletics (UW is some beaucracy that is unwilling to make any sort of change). They appear to be doing everything UW isn't.

I’m glad Wyoming has no desire (I hope) to become a diploma mill personally.

Hey! That’s not fair. Wyoming has lots of sunshine.

They were already going to be out of the WAC this season. Unitl they got the official word that they could join the MW this year they were planning on playing an independent schedule.

Yes - if anyone might sue GCU, seems to be the West Coast Conference. They committed to join starting July 2025 and then backed out.

Boise State and the traitors can…

Thanks, i was unaware they were going to be independent in 2025-26. I was aware they were originally slated for the WCC at one point.

I think Grand Canyon may win the MWC mbb this year.
They will certainly be competitive right away, but this version of the MWC will be a considerable step up in competition compared to the WAC. I think at least both SDSU and New Mexico finish ahead of them.

They will almost certainly finish ahead of Wyoming though.

Why are the pac-whatever schools mad? I don’t understand
I can’t say I fully understand their argument either. Publicly, they are saying it “negatively affects their scheduling, opportunities, and budgets.”

I can see how it mildly affects scheduling, but the impact is pretty insignificant. The only sport that GCU has a team in that will need the schedule redone is volleyball. All other sports haven’t even had their schedules released yet.

I have no idea what they mean by “negatively impacting their opportunities and budgets”. They are really going to have to do some mental gymnastics to justify that claim.

In reality, I think this is just a lawsuit to try to gain leverage in the lawsuit that matters regarding exit/poaching fees. They are trying to spread the MWC legal team thin and force the MWC to spend more in the legal department in the hopes the MWC caves in and agrees to a settlement favorable to the exiting teams.

  1. They have to redo volleyball schedules
  2. The media deal has another mouth to feed this year
  3. They're hanging their hats on the PAC being the best basketball conference in the west, but GCU is damn good and will likely destroy all of them.
