Shyatt says his biggest dissapointment is failing to develope good depth yet. BUt as it says I think we will benefit from the fact we redshirted 3 players this year(well 2 since we lost one of those). I've heard it said that we wish we could have redshirted Nance and Grabau but weren't able to but now we were able to and I think it will pay off big time especially with Herndon.

For me, it's obvious the progress he's made every season. His team gets more and more competitive every year. He beats ranked teams every year. He's pushed us into the top half of conference standings. He got us into the top 25 for the first time in 25 years.

Without the bad luck, the rebuild would look much better. Imagine if we wouldn't have lost Luke Martinez the year before. How long could we have remained in the top 25? Imagine if we hadn't lost our best player this year. How many more games would we have won? How far could we have went in the tournament?

We all know what the issue is and it's depth. So far that depth is due to certain players failing to develop.

Still, we have to remember where he started. When he took the job he had to replace 10 scholarships within his first year on the job. Is any coach ready to add that many contributors in one year? If Schroyer wasn't loading the classes to get a job somewhere else Shyatt wouldn't have had to give a scholarship to Matt Sellers.

I'm very impressed with Shy. It's just going to take a little more patience than most of us would like, but he's getting there.

Did anyone notice the commitment that Coach made to Tom Burman about transfers?

I particularly like the sense that Coach is preparing the program to be healthy even after he decides to hang it up and call it a career. It does not seem like he is trying to merely build a team but a program with staying power. We are not used to that here in Wyoming and some seem to struggle with the trade-offs that it requires in the short-term.

The article went on to talk about Sellers and Haldorson and their lack of production off the bench. I would just about lay everything that I had that one of these two guys is leaving at the very least and possibly both.

The big question is what happens with Hankerson. I don't know the whole story by a long shot, just some of the things that I have read, like from Vorel's blog that this wasn't his first offense. Personally I hope that he is able to get his life straightened out and he is able to enjoy a great senior season at UW, but that is up to Coach Shyatt, AD Burman and the family and Hankerson himself.

Shyatt also said that he was most disappointed in the fact that he hadn't developed more overall depth. There is no two ways about it, Shyatt has built a competitive program at UW, and I was greatly encouraged by the article in that he is far from satisfied by where they are at. I also appreciate what he said about not taking any short cuts in going after a lot of transfers and I am really impressed with how the team's academic standing is good.

I would just love to see what Wyoming could do for one whole season without any dramatic injury to our top player(s) or any off court incidents. Playing in a greatly renovated AA will be great and hopefully open up a great new stretch of Cowboy basketball, Shyatt has laid a good foundation, now with a key component or two this could be a championship team!

Great interview about the overall state of the athletic programs. It was encouraging to hear that the athletic department review that our short lived president ordered has started good dialogue on what we need to do to be successful in Division I athletics.

I know that a lot of people on here don't think that Burman should still have his job (I've questioned his actions myself), but I can appreciate someone who strives for success while still keeping himself grounded. We can't make big sweeping changes with any program in this state, but the small steps that the athletic department has been taking over the past decade or so are starting to add up to success. The trick now is to keep moving up the ladder and build for prolonged, sustainable success. I feel like we're on the right track.

Maybe next season Shyatt can get more experience for the bench guys in the non-conference portion of the season so our front line players are not exhausted or beat up as we get through conference season. If these guys are able to see more floor time in the early part of the season they will have the confidence once conference season starts. I am hopeful that players like Herndon and Barnes will be able to get some good experience early on. The more I am thinking about things I think it will be hard to redshirt Barnes next season. I really feel that we need at the very least a 3 person rotation underneath, but more preferably a 4 person rotation. I am throwing Nance in there as coming back and of course Cooke. I would love to see Herndon as a back-up most likely for Cooke and Barnes a back-up most likely for Nance. Shyatt did say that they would probably be looking for a forward and/or a wing in the spring. If it is a forward it would be great because I feel that it would possibly take some pressure off Nance for coming back too early or Barnes from having to play more than he is able to. I am actually not counting on Haldorson or Sellers for next year, if they are there then fine, but if they aren't it wouldn't be a big problem. My take is that I don't think that Gags would have mentioned the lack of support from both Sellers and Haldorson if they were both coming back. As far as the other freshman is concerned I don't see a great need for him to play next year and he might be a great candidate for reshirt next year. But I do expect Lieberman and Barnes to play and be contributors, but not huge contributors their freshmen year. I am wondering what is going to happen with McManaman, will he develop the game to be a solid contributor? Someone else can probably answer this question much better than I can. Hankerson can be a really important sub next year. It wouldn't surprise me to see anywhere from 1 to 3 scholarships open up for the spring.

It sounds like the presidential change and the consulting report has taken us to the first step: acknowledging that we have a problem. Now, people realize that there needs to be increased support for athletics if we want to have a chance to compete. That's a plus.

Now, the hard part is finding a solution. Hopefully, increased tuition and student fees will contribute to a stronger budget.

if you would have to give UW bball a grade what would you give them, I know there's many different categories we could look at and such, but overall as a program what grade would you have given them after the season.
Myself a high c+ to a B-, right on the cusp!!

Giving the program an overall grade is a very difficult task because the grade changes dramatically depending on which area of the program you are talking about.

Talent Level: C+
Depth: D
Coaching: A
Recruiting: C+
Player Development: B-

I suppose you could take the average of all of the above and come out with an overall grade of a C+ or B-, but that really doesn't tell the entire story. I respect what Shyatt is trying to do by building a program around developing high school players that aren't blue chippers, but I'm not convinced it's going to get this program to the top of the MWC. At least, not the current MWC with the level of talent SDSU, New Mexico, and UNLV bring in on a yearly basis. Yes, we played those teams tough this year, but the reality is that we finished 1-4 against those teams this season. Shyatt has a very tough task in front of him, but if there is one coach I trust has a chance to accomplish a MWC championship, it's coach Shyatt.
