Golf Teams?

Anyone know how that crapfest is going this spring? I bet that million dollar facility will pay off next year!

So, guessing that we need to keep those skinny plaid pant wearing fags on scholly to remain a MWC member (conference requirement to have so many teams / athletes / whatever)...are there any other sport options or MWC sanctioned sports that would make more sense? Yep & Nope! Men's Tennis, Baseball, and Women's Softball are the only ones UW doesn't participate in, that are sanctioned. Anyone know how many sports an instituation has to have in place to be a conference member? Is it 8? 9? We have 6 in Men's and 9 in women's. Or is it a Title IX numbers game and not sports?

Baseball. We need baseball.
Hockey wouldn't be a bad choice either. I am not a hockey fan myself but I don't hate it, and it seems like since we are in WYOMING hockey would make sense....

I second the hockey vote. Hockey would be a natural fit for Laramie. UW already fields a pretty good club team. Granted, hockey is only 2nd to football in cost to maintain a team (rink, equipment, etc...), but it would be a great sport to sponsor.

I have read in the past that we were at the minimum number of MWC sports, but I can't verify if that is true. Plus, I don't know how much the conference bylaws may have changed with all the recent upheaval.

Still, I generally assume that Golf is the most cost effective option (compared to adding Baseball/Women's Softball for example) to fill out our sports programs. I don't have anything against the Golf program, quite the opposite, but they are faced with obstacles that are really difficult to overcome in order to be competitive and those obstacles aren't going anywhere (cold, wind, more cold, a lot more wind, and a substandard golf course for that level of competition).

Hockey would of course be a lot of fun, but since we can't afford to fund our current athletic program at a level where we can compete, I can't see us putting together the money to start a program.

Just say no to Baseball. That would be the worst of both worlds. Due to the college baseball schedule (which kicks off in mid-february), a baseball team at UW faces the same climate and geography issues faced by the golf program, while also requiring a lot of money in infrastructure and operations like Hockey (not as much of course, but more than Golf).

I really just want to see us become consistently competitive in the revenue sports and find 2-3 niche programs where we can compete for conference titles in the Olympic sports. Wrestling is one (although not a MWC sport, unfortunately), and we just need to find 1-2 more. The Women's BB team and S&D teams have been close but can never get over the hump.

I totally agree with adding Baseball. Laramie and Wyoming actually produces some good baseball talent. I enjoy going to the Colts games.

The baseball argument is weak. You been to Corvallis or Eugene Oregon in Spring? Constant rain.
Yet both teams have Top 10 programs in college baseball. Granted half the Pac12 (11 since CU doesn't have a baseball team) is ranked.
Start the season with some tourneys on the road, in places like Southern California, and Texas, then start playing games @ teams in our region.
We can have a baseball team, it isn't that big of a stretch here in Laramie. Hell I have been playing outside for the last couple of weeks. Yes some games are bound to get delayed or cancelled because of weather but that happens anyways.

And this whole talk is kinda funny. We are at the bare minimum to be a MWC school, and we lost to Cal Poly last season, and some people said that we should go to FCS and a lot of people got soooo pissed off about it, but the truth is, we are literally barely above that. We lose one sport and we are probably going down...
No wonder we have been at the bottom of the barrel of the MWC for so long.

Personally, I hate baseball. Never liked it, even going to Rockies games, though my hatred of the sport may have stemmed from that. So, yeah. If we never add baseball, I won't complain.

I hate baseball almost as much I fucking hate BYU!!!!

MLB needs a salary cap and more importantly.....cheerleaders!!!!!

Kinda surprised Wyoming doesn't play Hockey. The schools that routinely bitch about the constant cold usually have a hockey team. Wyoming would probably be damn good given time.

Now, I know your gay.

Hockey and baseball are the two greatest sports ever.

Of course we CAN have a baseball team. We did for many years, and we sponsor golf. That's not the issue. The issue is: can we have a GOOD baseball team? We struggled to compete in the past and barring some type of major infrastructure development and a large operating budget, I just don't see it happening.

There is a reason that even CU, with membership in strong baseball leagues (Big 12, then PAC) and tons of TV money, doesn't sponsor the sport (and obviously Boulder is better positioned geographically, although that's relative)

Hockey's expensive, and there are many cold weather schools that don't sponsor it for that reason (the Montana schools, the Dakota schools not named UND, CSU, CU, Marquette, etc.).

Honest to God, I have never attended a sporting event with cheerleaders in mind. You barely even notice them in football.

The very first sporting event I ever went to (1984 USFL game in Denver vs. Phily) I spent most of the game looking at the cheerleaders thru my dad's binoculars.

Fuck all the baseball haters...
Baseball is the best sport there is.
And to go to a game because of cheerleaders...jesus just might as well sit at home and look up porn while watching the game on game tracker.

I wish UW had a baseball team.

Baseball is on par with golf. In that, it is about as exciting as watching grass grow or paint dry.

It's okay if you don't like baseball, it's kind of a smart person sport.
