College hoops has now started, now we just got to wait til 7!

Score predictions?
Wyo 74
UT-M 53

I say...Adams leads the team with 22 points, Nance leads the team with 13 rebounds.

Go Pokes! New season is here! Road to the Big Dance starts tonight in Laramie!

Wyoming defense started off good the first 5 minutes and the last 2-3 minutes it has went to complete crap.

Need to cover the 3 ball and get back on defense.

THey were covering the 3. Any closer and they would have fallen onto the shooter. Pressure 3s just hitting the nets. Not much you can do about that.

A couple of those 3's they hit the guys were wide open. They knocked 3 in a row down which is good shooting on their part but the defense for Wyoming needs to rotate better.

These new rules regarding hand checks will soon make the game unwatchable. Basketball will be played at the pace of a baseball game.

Hopefully overall the defense does a little better in the 2nd half and we can hold them to 58 or less. I don't want them to reach 60.
The 3 point shooting looks pretty damn good over all for Wyoming but I think we should get the ball down low to Nance a little bit more and let him do some damage inside. Hope to see a better played 2nd half.

Nance has been doing a lot of rebounds, but is being heavily covered when he tries to take it to the rim. This however, has left the other big (be it Cooke or whoever) great chances to get points, and they've come away with some.

Hankerson looks like when he puts it on the floor he can get to the rim anytime he wants if he uses his body. I think he is just trying to adjust to game speed and get comfortable but I can see him getting better with each game.

We have some talent on this team just need to play together for a few games and I think they do have potential actually.

Hankerson reminds me a little bit of Turk Boyd (showing my age with that reference), same build and quickness. If he keeps improving he could be something special.

We ended up shooting 70% at the free throw line which isn't terrible considering how bad we started and then we only had 10 turnovers which is excellent.

Hankerson scored 14 points in very limited action. He must have only played no more than 15 minutes.

To me this team looks like it does have a decent amount of potential and we may not see if the first few games completely but once they have a few games under their belt and gel together I can see this team having a chance to have a very decent year.

Saw the Pokes in person for the first time this year. A couple of observations:

1. Holy Zone Batman! - I can't remember the last time I saw a Wyoming team play that much zone. Looked like the players were still adjusting to it too. Credit to UT-Martin for hitting some shots over the zone. The zone also led to some of our rebounding problems (we weren't technically outrebounded, but they had more 2nd chance opportunities than the Pokes did) as we aren't comfortable yet rebounding out of a zone, which is quite different when you have to find someone to put a body on.

2. Front court depth - we have none. Cooke and Nance started and they were the only frontcourt players that saw playing time until garbage time in the last few minutes when Haldorson saw the floor. Shyatt went with 4 guards (with either Hankerson or Granberry at the "4") rather than put in any of our frontcourt players. With Sellers injured, Herndon redshirting (which was an obvious call), we only really have two options with Haldorson and Vernon and Shyatt obviously doesn't trust either one.

3. New Rules (or the enforcement/emphasis of said rules) - They suck. It took like 45 minutes to get through the last 8 minutes and there was no flow to the game. Let them play basketball.

4. I saw Shyatt's postgame comments and they articulate what I noticed...this team doesn't have an identity yet. Who are they on either side of the ball?

5. I thought Grabau played well. Got in some foul trouble, but they were calling a foul if you even looked at the opposing player funny in the 2nd half. TW3 can certainly shoot. Looked like a freshman in other aspects (couple of bad turnovers, etc.), but is clearly a player. Key part of the team. Granberry again looked hesitant. We need to get him some perimeter looks as I believe he can help us. Hankerson has a unique game, doesn't look good shooting the ball but can get to the rim with his strength.

I always enjoy your posts about basketball Nowhere! I think we will have to play zone much more this season since it can keep you out of foul trouble more. I agree there isn't much depth at forward, but I also think he used 4 gaurds a lot because we were playing a small team and didn't need 2 forwards. I like the look of this team and they play exciting basketball to watch. We have much better depth than we did last year and we can really shoot that 3. I think it will be a fun season of Poke basketball.
