From First Whistle to Final Ride...Our Season Comes to a Close

Man, just like that our 2025-26 season has come to an end. Talk about a ride to end the season that sets social media ablaze. I thought Wyoming had a real shot at Top 10, but a 12th place finish is nothing short of great. I am not sure how Wyoming wrestled some 15 duals and what felt like 22 starting lineups; somehow they did it and were successful.

Let’s break down those AA runs. I know Gabe Willochell didn’t AA, but his run on the backside was incredible and came up about 30 seconds short of AA in the blood round. I truly believe his effort against Swiderski got Neitenbach and Carroll ready for their blood-round matches. I know your career didn’t begin at Wyoming Gabe but thank you for being a Cowboy.

Eddie would win a tight 4-2 match while making it interesting at the end. I think you could see that smile from outer space. He also reminded me of Ricky Bobby when he didn’t know what to do with his hands after the match. You could tell he was soaking it all in then ran over to the coaches. Eddie would finish 7th and such a marked improvement where he looked more relaxed and gave the National Champion, McNelley, all he could handle in the quarterfinals.

Carroll decided he wanted the hard path to AA where you lose your first match and then win four in a row on the backside. His blood-round match he was down much of the match 3-1 and then scored a late takedown where I thought he would ride out for the last 13 seconds, but that wouldn’t be the Cowboy way; we need the excitement to keep our cardiologist gainfully employed. He would win in SV and run over to Coach Ford, now kudos to the training staff for helping Coach Ford in picking up Carroll in excitement. You could tell that victory meant so much to Carroll and the staff, though he would finish 8th he seemed to make that run with an injured knee and nothing but grit.

Novak pressed on Barr but would come up short in the Semi-Final round and finish 4th falling to Little in the 3rd place match. His bonus points propelled the team up the leaderboard, and he was laser focused all weekend. We get one more year with Joey; my hope is he breaks that 66-year drought between National Champions for Wyoming Wrestling.

I didn’t want to mention the portal, but it does open April 1st and will be interesting to see who leaves or who Wyoming brings in. That run at NCAA and the new facility should help recruiting and retaining wrestlers in Laramie.

Biggest Offseason questions:
Who is the next Eddie and Joey, meaning, who comes onto the scene randomly and makes their own runs?

How do the incoming freshmen fit into this team? It is evident that the team this year was very close and you hope the young men coming into the program buy into that culture.

Can Joey Novak finally beat Coach Ford in golf? In the past Joey mentioned Coach Ford is the worst golfer, but my interview with Coach Ford mentioned that Joey has never beaten him at Jacoby.

My goals this offseason are more interviews on Frozen Mats and Wrestling Chats with the coaches and wrestlers to bring in a better build up to the 2026-27 season but will take a break. It kind of feels the end of the movie the Truman Show; where Jim Carey walks out and then the show ends. Time to watch American Gladiator re-runs!
