This is a FOOTBALL forum??? :orly:

Obviously, this part of wyonation is a football forum, but the reason I posted it over here is because that is where all the people camp out, because most of them don't give two shits about our basketball team.
Annddd it's fans like you guys that show why our fanbase sucks.

Why the hell do I have to give a crap about basketball when the sport is of negative interest to me?

Not to mention, I hope you go watch every wrestling event and women's basketball and soccer games, or you're a big freaking hypocrite.

I don't think you understand that BeaverPoke is the ultimate fan and is entitled to tell you what kind of fan you are or are not.

Now you're getting it.

I remember some people saying with Bohl, like Glenn we will be in every game we play, win or lose we are Cowboy Tough and when we do lose, we will lose with grace, never give up, and represent our school and state. Meanwhile, Larry Shyatt has been doing this for 3 seasons now.

We have lost 8 games by 47 combined points, an average of not even 6 points per game.
Wyo football lost 7 games by a combined 168 points.

You want a team that represent Cowboy Tough, never quitting, never giving up, even if the other team is bigger, stronger, faster, and better than us?
Then support the basketball team.

I mean, my god, what kind of miserable life do you CHOOSE to live if the only sport you care about is WYOMING FOOTBALL?

I'm not saying quit following wyo football in the offseason, but a lot of you guys act like we have no basketball team. Every day on Wyonation the football forum has like 5 new topics, and the basketball forum gets MAYBE 5 new topics in a week.

Wyonation is all about how some 18 year old is going to be the savior of Wyoming football.
SPOILER ALERT: If Brett Smith couldn't save this program, then none of these guys are either!

+1

I happen to love basketball, but if you don't who am I to force it on you? I couldn't name one person on Wyo's track team or soccer team, or swim teams. Is that because I am a shitty fan? I don't think so, I'm just not entertained by those sports.

If you don't like basketball that's fine. My rant and bitching was mostly aimed at the people who only support the team if they make the NIT or Big Dance.

No! You really don't mean that you are not entertained by running sports.
Running is part of basketball, ya know.

Fair enough, but here's a question to ponder: which do you enjoy more - a regular season game, or a playoff game?
I'm guessing you go from "Yeaaaah!" to "YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

Now put yourself in the shoes of the average fan who isn't all that interested in the sport (not talking about myself, I can't sit through playoff games in basketball either). Their excitement probably goes from "Eh" to "Yeaaaah!"

Truth is, most people choose other things than sports to be excited about for a big part of the year. Football is nice because of how few games there are, so the investment isn't quite as big. You can easily get going for a dozen games a year.

I personally spend way too much time on my fandom of ice hockey, but at least since that is a shared obsession with my wife and son, it's not too bad.

But that is Beaver's point, our fanbase is terrible in general. The people on this board are obviously die-hard fans and I'm not directing this to any of you. However, it is pathetic that it takes going to the NIT or Big Dance for you to start caring, that means you aren't really a fan you just like hopping on the bandwagon in good years. We have the best team in 10 years and we are only getting 6-7k fans at basketball, that is pathetic.

My fanhood for Wyoming football is the same as Nebraska basketball: tied to the coaches. I have no allegiances to the school itself, so I don't feel bad only following one of the teams.

My allegiances are to my alma mater (Division II Southwest Minnesota State) and the University of Minnesota. I don't have enough time to follow anyone else completely.

So how are you connected to Bohl or staff? *forgive my lack of research as my time is limited but you didn't go to NDSU...etc?
I'm not, really, other than attending NDSU my freshman year.

A lot of Minnesota people kept tabs on NDSU through their run, even if there's no connection.

So we agree...just like we would like to have the War sold out in football, it would be nice to have the AA sold out in basketball. the Basketball team is playing well and deserve to have the place packed. the wrestling team would love to have 6 k support them.

There are a couple of important differences between Men's Basketball and Wrestling (or any other sport not named Football):

1. It is a revenue sport. This sport is the only sport other than FB that drives media rights revenue or has a significant impact upon CJC membership, etc. (I am sure there are a few folks that only support for CJC for Wrestling or Soccer or another sport, but that is a tiny minority).

2. Media coverage. Men's BB is also the only sport, other than Football, that can generate positive media coverage for the University of Wyoming across the country. It may not be fair, but it's simply the reality. Why do we spend 10 million dollars a year of state money to prop up our intercollegiate athletics program? Because it is used a marketing and outreach arm for the University. Only two sports have an opportunity to provide a positive return on that investment and Men's BB is one of them (although Football is of course more important).

I am not telling anyone what they should do or how they should support UW. I will only say that if you enjoy the sport of Basketball and support the University of Wyoming, than this particular team is well worth your support. I was on the east coast on Wednesday night so there I was in my hotel room anxiously awaiting tip-off at 11 PM. I spent the next 2.5 hours anxiously pacing the hotel room cheering on the Pokes. As a fan, isn't that all you can ask for? No matter how difficult the opponent or environment, the Pokes play hard on every possession and have a chance to win.

Actually, wrestling does turn a profit at a few schools (Iowa State for instance) and is the 3rd most profitable sport at Wyoming. If Wyoming were to continue its rise in wrestling and become a national power (i.e. consistent top 10), I would bet that wrestling would turn a profit at Wyoming.

Look at all these positive posts..... :D

Good job! If I wanted to read people complain about UW or the fanbase I would go to the MWC or CSU forums.

GO POKES! tip-off in about 1 hour. ;)

See how exciting running is, watching them run in a tight pack wondering who is going to come first!

He really needs to put his water bottle in a better spot.

Apparently the Avs are pretty popular with women these days too. Wonder why.
