Football vs. Basketball Dialogue

YankPoke said:
This school has always been a basketball school, football has had it's teams that had great success sure, but overall it is not a very good program. Basketball we have history that actually rivals a lot of schools out there, and is damn near the top in the Mountain West. We are not suggesting to abandon football, or prioritize it, we all want a winning football program. The thing is we should be throwing Shyatt all the support that he needs in order to build a powerhouse basketball program.

WHAT history? A National title DURING World War II.

My God dude, I didn't know if you were a football only type of guy or what, you need to calm the fuck down over a simple question, jack ass.
You call him out and then he defends himself and YOUR offended?
Beaver didn't call him out at all, he just asked if he would support a winning basketball team instead of supporting a shitty football team. I don't think his question was off base and it was a major overreaction to call him a jackass, he didn't attack him in any way and the attack was not warranted so lay off Cuttslam.

+1

Wasn't calling him out at all, just asking if he goes to games in Laramie.
Whether intentional or not, the tone of your post was very passive aggressive, and kind of "holier than thou." Also, what does it matter if I've never even seen one basketball game in Laramie? How does that have any bearing on the substance of my post previously in the conversation? It doesn't.

Let's see here 14 tournament appearances a National Title that only around 20 schools across the country can claim, 16 conference titles, along with 2 conference tournament titles. Several NIT appearances as well and an above 500 program in its history. We have never won jack shit in football, we have only been to 13 bowl games in over 100 years of football, and since around the 90s it is pretty easy to make one. We have never sniffed a national title and we have been one of the worst programs in the country since the late 90s. All of our history is in basketball and we have always been a basketball school, time to wake up to reality there Wyokie.

Sorry for it coming off like the "holier than thou" tone but I was simply just asking.
And I was wondering because you said you aren't going to drive your family on icy roads in winter to go to Laramie, which makes sense. And since your location says in Colorado, I was wondering if you went to games against DU, AFA, CU, and CSU.
That's why I said "ever in Laramie".
Not like I was talking shit, just trying to get a gauge on how many fans do actually make the icy trek in the middle of winter to Laramie.

Come on Beaver you were talking a little shit

No, I wasn't.

But you are.
Like always. I don't know what your problem with me is that makes you have to always instigate shit. I don't know if you're just a straight up ass-hole or if you hate people that want Wyo to win and talk about Wyo winning, but whatever the reason is, that's all you do.

If it was anyone else that asked that question, you wouldn't have ran to their defense, but since it was BeaverPoke you decided to jump on in.

He was talking shit on other threads, but nowhere on here was he talking shit. Stop trying to start something that isn't there Cuttslam, I didn't know asking a guy if he went to basketball games was talking shit.

Nope just tired of you and others attacking people when they don't say anything to warrant it. He is overly optomistic sure, but at least he is positive about this school and our athletics instead of always talking about how shitty we are. He didn't do anything to start shit on this thread so you shouldn't be calling him out on it.

I can relate with BrewPoke about basketball beibg hard to get to if you're not living in Laramie, before I started school here I hadn't been to a game in Laramie, only.the Casper Shootout. So in that it makes sense to keep most of the funding with football, but at the same time, IMO I'd rather have one program toward the top of the MWC and one shitty to mediocre on.a "good" year than 2 mediocre at best programs

If I see more wins, it'll be on the television screen. I just told you that I'm not about to haul the family on icy roads, make the effort in time and money (you know how much two decent hotel rooms in Laramie are on a game day?) for a basketball game. It's a different animal. Football is an event, with the marching bands, tailgating, all of it. It engages alumni and their families. Basketball doesn't do that.

I'm with Brew_Poke. Football is an all day event, Basketball is not. I rarely make basketball games, last one I attended was against CU last year. I rarely miss football games, I've made 7 this year despite living in Southern Colorado. The timing is bad for me too, basketball season is ski season and I'm usually on the slopes.

Basketball being on week nights makes it very tough as well. I went to every home game the entire time I was in school. But I haven't been to one since I graduated. Didn't even make the ones at DU or AF the past couple years. Wanted to go to the CU game but a late wednesday night is tough to make when you have to work the next day and you are looking at 2 hours of driving to get to and from boulder

I'm not saying abandon football, just put more emphasis on hoops.
+1
+2

Ok...like emphasis as in...

1. Build a state of the art AA for basically hoops only
2. Building a MPG - with Basketball offices, locker rooms, weight room, break room, study room - all of which were accomplished prior to the RAC / IPF for football, etc.
3. Purchasing special flooring and additional hoops for both the Fieldhouse & MPG - so basketball had 3 venues to practice in, and hold camps in - again all of which was done prior to the RAC / IPF, etc.
4. Expanding the basketball budget to include tutors, and academic (basketball specific) help.
5. And the latest - renovate the AA - to the tune of 30 - 40 million

And the list goes on...

Basketball has enough emphasis. Football is where UW needs to put more emphasis.

Tom Burman would love you guys - you are making his job easier (if possible to do so)! The less he has to work (doing less with less) the better. And basketball is his ticket - always has been, always will be. Tom is a "basketball first" AD.

I don't necessarily agree that UW is a basketball school first, and football second (ETC). I would venture to say - like it is nationally - football is where it is at. NCAA football kicks NCAA basketball's ass. Just like the NFL kicks the NBA's ass. We have the resources at UW, and need to make football the priority, or we may as well be another Wichita or Creighton or Butler or VC or Gonzaga - and at that point, we would lose more than 75% of the athletic budget, as well as a huge portion of the fanbase and boosters.

No way of knowing what will happen for sure, but with this whole concussion thing in football, youth participation numbers are starting to decrease....fairly rapidly. Could the sport's popularity start fading?

If we emphasized basketball now and beat the football apocalypse, we'd be ahead of the game!

I wonder about this as well - but the technology sector will solve the concussion problem. Hell, just recently, some grad student puke from bWHYu developed an impact sensor for helmets. That is step one. Read it here:

The concussion problem can't be solved directly by technology. It's the impact of the brain against the skull, not the impact of the skull against other things that causes the injury. A person can be concussed without even hitting their head. It's a deceleration MOI.

Exactly, technology can help in the fields of diagnosing and recovery evaluation from concussion, but they can only do so much in the area of prevention. Best example is that 10 years ago, everyone thought that mouthpiece use would drastically reduce the incidence of concussion. Now, most evidence suggests that the use of a mouthpiece is fairly irrelevant to the incidence rates of concussions. Sure some technological advances in helmet technology could help reduce a certain percentage of concussions, but it can only go so far. IMO, the best way to reduce concussions is to completely remove helmets and pads from the game, rugby has fewer concussions than football because players know they can't go head-to-head with each other.

Anyway, I agree with Back Harlow, with everything going on with concussions, football will be a less popular game in 20 years.
