Football Question/Observation

Can somebody please explain to me why when we have won every coin toss but one (Utah State who took the ball 1st half) that we defer until the second half? We are not the Broncos or Patriots for pete's sake - instead of the defense giving up a score on the first possession, would it not be worthwhile to try and score and get some momentum? Maybe someday when we have a defense we can defer but at this point what the hell do they have to lose? Just irritates the hell out of me

If we put our offense out there right away, it means going up against the opponent's first string defense - a sure 3 and out. However, if we wait until the 2nd half, when were already down by 20 plus points, then we might get to go up against a bored, disinterested defense that allows us a few first downs. Then, just like on the UW website's game recap, we can tout that we outgained the opponent in the second half. And the coach can say that we played better in the second half. It just wasn't enough. Simple, huh?

Electing to receive the ball first also gives you a chance of one more possession in the first half.

Because "Cowboy Tough" thats why.

Start off the game enforcing our will on defense. Just because our defense is awful doesn't mean we should ever change a strategy.

It is simple.....Bohl thinks he is a defensive guy and that is where he wants to make his statement. Unfortunately his statement is a joke at this point.

Because Vigen needs extra time to determine if he's going to run straight into the defensive tackles six times in a row or seven times in a row.

Take the fucking ball if you win the toss! I'm sick of spotting the opposing team a touchdown (or two) before we ever touch the ball.

how do we really know, it's obvious our D can't stop much, keeping them on field, maybe if we changed it for a change and put our O on o field our D would be up to the task a bit more, I don't know

So true. You'd think 'ol Bohly would have learned after the first 6 games (and first 2 plays in each of those games) that our D hadn't "fired up" the engine yet (they were still in breakfast mode), and it would be best to put the vaunted & prolific offense out there.

I think we should get rid of the deferring thing and just kick off. Try reverse psychology. Let the opposing offense know that this game is different and our D means business.

In all honesty, I am confused on deferring until the second half anyway. How often does someone defer, then decide to kick the ball? I don't think I have ever seen that.

Never. If we would elect to kick in the first half the other team would start with the ball both halves. Essentially it means if you win the flip you get to choose what to do in the first half and the other team gets to choose the second half. If you defer you give the other team the choice in the first half and take the choice in the second. Meaning you would never choose to kick cuz the other team would get the ball first and then in the second half it would be their choice and they would choose to receive, getting the ball to start both halves.

So basically if you win the toss your choice is to receive the ball or defer.

I was being cynical re: our defnse...sorry if I didn't come off that way. I am very very familiar with the rules.

I just think the whole "deferring to second half thing" is dumb. Get a coin. Two choices: Kick or Receive. Done.

I was being sarcastic...but exactly to my point, no one ever CHOOSES to kick. Therefore, the deferring thing is just dumb.

Unless your opponent has had too many blows to the head and doesn't get it. You may get the ball to start both halves...

Ooops sorry I missed your tone. I agree it would make things easier.

I think I remember when that happened. Happened to me once in HS too. They won the toss and elected to kick. WE went back to our coaches and said it looks like we wil lget the ball both halves. Then the refs came over and said they meant to defer and changed it. Always thought that was BS.

I want to say that Wyoming did this once in the mid-90's. I remember being at a game in Laramie when Wyo played UTEP. We deferred until half and Wyo was winning by a considerable margin at halftime and decided to kickoff for the 2nd half too. I may be completely wrong, but I thought I remembered that because at the time I was super confused as to why they were getting the ball at the start and at half; not knowing the rules very well at this young age made it stick in my memory. Maybe someone can recall this as well.
