Good for Odom. Coaches and athletic departments are going to have to start drawing the line somewhere.

I know Sluka is known more as a dual threat QB, but he hasn’t exactly lit it up this season for UNLV. In the first three games, he is completing less than 50% of his passes for just over 100 yards/game.

How about Ike for collecting NIL for a season he didn’t play at Wyoming and then bolting to Gonzaga for a big payday? Ike literally went to Boys and Girls Club 2 days before hitting portal (presumably to meet NIL requirement to get the money).

How about Waylee for collecting NIL but limiting his play to 4 games to potentially cash in on an NIL deal here or elsewhere next season?

"UNLV insider Joe Arrigo is currently live on a Twitter space. He says Sluka went into Coach Odom’s office on Tuesday and said he needed $300k to stay. Odom said that was not happening and Sluka cleared out his locker. Sluka skipped practice on Wednesday and posted his intention to leave that night. Arroyo believes Sluka got an NIL agent after the Kansas game who got into Sluka’s ear about making more NIL money. The re may or may not be another school involved, but the timing of this implies that this is a play to try to strong arm UNLV into a payday now.*
 
Makes $550k a year. Winning percentage in conference games of the football program is 41% and mens basketballat 37% in his tenure. 0 conference football championships and 1 MWC basketball tournament championship with 0 regular season titles. Can blame it on the remoteness and poor television market, but the real reason the PAC12 wants nothing to do with Wyoming are those numbers above. I have yet to see Ed Siedel do anything? Does he have a pulse?

I love NIL. The athletes have been crapped on for years, while the universities and coaches could do what they want; walk out on their own contracts, pull scholarships, get certain players "boosted", etc... NIL has lifted their skirts as to how us meaningless most of them are. Sure, small market universities like us won't be able to compete, but I've never imagined a scenario where we'd be in the hunt for the playoffs. I just hope for a shot at the conference Championship, a victory over CSU, and a decent bowl game every year. Pretty much the same thing every fan of a non-P5 (now P4) school wishes for. NIL has made all of these "big" school's panic and do stupid things. Right now, the two best teams in the Big 12 were Mountain West teams a few years back. The new Pac12 will be dominated by Boise State, another MWC team. The MWC is delivering the Great Replacement Theory of college football : )

Stanford and Cal jumped to the sanctuary of the ACC when the PAC was blowing up, but Clemson and Florida State are looking to leave the AAC, as will Miami. So now these bozos, who are steps away from the Pacific Ocean get to play their away games steps away from the Atlantic Ocean.

At the end of the day what has been created, but not quite finished yet, is the SEC and the Big Ten are the minor league for the NFL. These two conferences still have some adjusting to do by getting rid of the Vanderbilt's and Rutger's of the leagues to make room for the Clemson's and Florida State's. Once they wrap this up, the rest of us can continue on with real college football. Then...these SEC and Big Ten schools have to ask themselves if this is what they really wanted. To be the bitches of the NFL. Because that's the path they're on.

$300k is peanuts if this QB can get the team into the college football playoffs. UNLV are (were) one of the top two G5 schools, Boise being the other, in line to be in this select group. P5 schools have linemen that get paid more than $300k. And all of the P5 QBs would be insulted to be "only" making $300k. Sluka is playing the cards he's been dealt, good for him. I hope he lands at a P5 school that will give him his $300k as a backup, or even a lower-level school that is foolish enough to give him what he wants. He has led UNLV to 2 wins over P5 team in his first 3 weeks, and in the other game he dropped 72 points on his opponent. Hell, position coaches make more than $300k, why not the star of the frickin' team?

This is funny. Are these the same athletes that beginning in grade school are treated differently than other kids? The high school superstars who get special treatment from every administrator or teacher? The one's who gain acceptance to some of our finest colleges but can have trouble passing basic math? The one's like my friend who got a Rolex for visiting Michigan (where he later enrolled)? Assuming we aren't talking about Penn State here, these kids are treated like royalty from a young age until they either make it to the NFL or get a dose of real life. Yes, there are a ton of good kids that came up against bad odds (family and environment) but that is a different story. For some kids, these universities and the taxpayers threw them a lifeline and gave them opportunity at the expense of others. I've never seen universities or coaches "do what they want" or randomly pull scholarships. Many of these coaches go out of their way to develop these young people into adults. In my opinion, Bohl did this or at least tried his hardest to make a difference.

The kid from UNLV is a spoiled punk. "Coach, its gonna cost $300K to go 4-0...." My god, time to revisit the Pete Rose ban. Imagine any other "professional" presenting that option. "I am sorry, sir, but if you really want to beat cancer, it's gonna cost you a cool million." The kid makes politicians look like saints.

Crapped on. What about their scholarships? It’s not like they didn’t get something in return. $10,000s of thousands in the value of an education if they chose to study.

NIL is destroying college athletics. Wyoming is one who will not do well because of NIL and the transfer portal. Ike come to mind……

NIL is here. Y'all can hate the system all you want, but it's shifted the balance of power back to the athletes, where it always should have been. Players being able to get their own bag is good for players and bad for schools (who have been profiting off players for decades).

Scholarship dollars are literal peanuts (and not dollars in their pockets) relative to the amount of money players could(and should) be making.

Calling kids trying to make a better life for themselves lacking ethics, punks, spoiled, etc is exactly the type of thinking that will lead to continued mediocrity.

We can sit around and wait for something different to happen, or be part of the solution. Your choice. Me? I'm going to continue to celebrate whatever bags athletes are able to collect. Life is short, and athletes owe no loyalty to anyone. We all know schools and coaches would drop players immediately if they didn't develop into something worth putting on the field or court.
 
I personally think college football and basketball will eventually look a lot like Baseball where there are pro teams aligned with each team in addition to college teams. I always thought most of the SEC/Big 10 etc. were basically pro teams anyhow.
