Final Wyoming Depth Chart of Spring Announced
Little Change in Final Spring Two-Deep
Laramie, Wyo. (April 28, 2015) -- With 2015 spring football now concluded for the Wyoming Cowboys, the Wyoming coaching staff released the final depth chart of the spring on Tuesday. No starting spots changed from the Cowboy depth chart of a week ago, but redshirt freshman Tyree Mayfield did move up into the No. 2 spot at tight end for the only change in the final two-deep.
Mayfield’s move up the depth chart was due in part to an excellent performance in the Brown and Gold Game last Saturday. He caught a team high six passes for 65 yards, including catching a 22-yard touchdown pass. The Spring Game was a very productive day for Cowboy tight ends, as junior Jacob Hollister, who is listed No. 1 on the depth chart at tight end, had two receptions for 57 yards, including a 54-yard catch and run for a TD of his own.
Looking at the remainder of the offensive two-deep, redshirt senior Cameron Coffman concluded spring football where he started the spring -- as the projected starter at quarterback. Coffman’s totals in three spring scrimmages, including last week’s Brown and Gold Game, saw him complete 27 of 47 passes (57.4%) for 305 yards, two TDs and one interception. Junior-college transfer and sophomore Josh Allen kept a firm grip on the No. 2 spot at QB. Allen completed 16 of 30 passes (53.3%) for 251 yards, three TDs and one interception in the three spring scrimmages.
Senior Shaun Wick and sophomore Brian Hill were listed No. 1 and 2, respectively, at running back on the two-deep. The tandem combined for 1,549 rushing yards a year ago. Wick enters his senior season with 2,082 career rushing yards. He needs only 42 yards to enter the UW Career Top 10. Hill was named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week for his performance at Fresno State as a true freshman last season.
They are joined in the backfield by returning starter at fullback, sophomore Drew Van Maanen. Junior Jordan Ellis is listed No. 2 at fullback.
Juniors Tanner Gentry and Jake Maulhardt are listed as the two projected starters at wide receiver. Gentry caught 32 passes for 435 yards his sophomore season of 2014. Maulhardt had 21 receptions for 274 yards as a sophomore. They are backed up by fellow juniors Tom Thornton and Tanner Simpson.
The projected starters at offensive line include: left tackle Ryan Cummings, left guard Chase Roullier, center Charlie Renfree, right guard Troy Boyland and right tackle Taylor Knestis. Senior Rafe Kiely, who was limited at the start of spring drills due to a hand injury, is listed No. 2 at center and provides added depth and experience having started 17 of 21 career games.
The defense is led by senior All-America candidate Eddie Yarbrough at defensive end. Yarbrough returns for his senior season after earning First Team All-Mountain West honors as both a sophomore and junior. He was also named to two national watch lists as a junior in 2014 -- the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List and the Ted Hendricks Award Watch List.
Yarbrough is joined by three veterans along the defensive line. Fellow senior Siaosi Hala’api’api holds down the other defensive end position. Junior Chase Appleby returns at nose tackle after being a key contributor last season, and junior Uso Olive returns to start at defensive tackle after starting the final 11 games on the defensive line his sophomore season.
At one outside linebacking spot, junior Lucas Wacha will provide good leadership and experience to the linebacking corps with 15 career starts to his credit. The other projected starter at outside linebacker is sophomore Tim Kamana. Kamana started the final eight games of 2014 at strong safety for the Pokes. In the middle, converted tight end Eric Nzeocha is listed No. 1 at the MIKE linebacker position.
The secondary saw a number of young players get opportunities to show what they could do during spring football. Redshirt freshman Chavez Pownell emerged as a playmaker at strong safety, intercepting a pass in the Brown and Gold Game and coming up with some big hits during spring ball. Three other redshirt freshmen also are listed No. 1 at their respective spots heading into the fall. C.J. Jennings is listed No. 1 at the field cornerback position. Anthony Makransky is listed No. 1 at the boundary corner, and Adam Pilapil is the projected starter at free safety.
Rounding out the depth chart at the specialist positions are: two-year starter Ethan Wood at punter, two-year starter Brendan Turelli at long snapper and redshirt junior Justin Martin at place-kicker.
