Feedback from Coach Rahl

Well-known member
So those of you who knew I sent some Utah kids over to the Wyo Coaches....this is what they responded with, I've also included links to their highlight films which includes their size, etc, my comments are in bold font:

Eric,

Below is an abbreviated version of the feedback I got from position coaches on the kids you sent me.

Jonah Trinnaman- American Fork High School (WR)- ok; I question his speed, would like to see if we can get to camp........ran a 10.89 100m dash at BYU Invitational (Big high school track meet held on BYU's campus) I know that track speed and football speed are different, but you be the judge:

Isaiah Holloway- Timpview High School, Provo (DB)- too small!......listed at 6'1, 170lbs?

Sky Manu- Bingham High School, West Jordan (DB)- size also and issue listed as 5’11 I think he is too short for a Saftey.....Luke Anderson was listed at 5'10, 195lbs.....Sky is listed at 5'11, 185 lbs.

Would love some feedback from you guys on these kids and the comments from the Wyo coaching staff on how to respond?

Thanks!

I can't get hudl.com to work for me. Just goes to a loading screen.

But maybe they play on really big teams that make them look small? Otherwise, they're a bit on the skinny side, but otherwise good sized.

Gotta be pretty good to get a look at receiver. Our receiving corp looks very good on paper. And speed isn't everything. It helps, but there are other factors to consider.

I don't think weight should be too big of a consideration unless you're talking about linemen. If Greener can't put 20 lbs of decent weight on a 170lb DB in 2 years (including redshirt), he shouldn't be an FBS strength coach (this is within reason, of course, you can't expect a 170lb DB to transform into a 230lb Buck). You can't do anything about height, I agree, but like you said, we have players currently on our roster that small.

I guess it depends on what other potential recruits are like. If you have a guy with similar skill set but already has the size...gotta take the size.

Good points, yah I thought 6'1 170 seemed to be a pretty good sized Junior, keep in mind he's probably been lifting and put on another 5-10 lbs. I would think. I'll probably keep an eye on these kids anyways to see how they perform during this upcoming season.

Also- maybe this is just a hint that Wyoming is able to pull kids with size and that their recruiting is going really well?

I think this is the key. We don't know who they are currently after so to say they are not too small without knowing more would be unwise. Also I put my trust in the coaches that they know what they are looking for.

I think it is awesome that you got so much info and candid info from the staff and that they were willing to take a look at the guys you sent them. If you are lookng for how I would respond I would say"Thanks for your feedback. I will continue to keep an eye out for future cowboys." I wouldn't try to get into a discussion with why the coaches are wrong in their analysis. It looks like they will be in contact with the WR at least thats pretty cool.

Luke Anderson was shorter...but wasn't he also the fastest guy on the field? Or was it the other Luke that was fast? Sometimes other attributes may make height less of an issue.

I agree TS. It doesn't seem like you have been, SLC, but make sure these exchanges in no way make it seem like you're questioning the coaches. So far, it seems to be going swimmingly.

So this was how I responded:

Hey Coach Rahl-

I certainly appreciate the feedback on these kids. Can I ask what your position coaches are looking for in concern with size? I added a few questions/comments on these kids below your responses:

Jonah Trinnaman- American Fork High School (WR)- ok; I question his speed, would like to see if we can get to camp.....Anything I can do to help get him to camp? Also, he ran a 10.82 100m at State Track Meet, which was the 3rd best time in the state for the entire year.

Isaiah Holloway- Timpview High School, Provo (DB)- too small!....He is 6'1, 170lbs, too small in terms of weight? What are your ideal sizes for a DB coming out of a players junior year?

Sky Manu- Bingham High School, West Jordan (DB)- size also an issue listed as 5’11 I think he is too short for a Saftey....any interest as a potential CB?

Also- I'm assuming you found these kids' highlight films? Thanks again for the response and look forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks,

This was his response back:

All of our camp information is located at http://www.coachchristensen.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; you could certainly send the link to this kid and see if he is interested. 6’1 is definitely a good height but 170 lbs is a huge concern we ideally would like these kids to weigh 190+ coming out of HS. There was no mention of any interest at a CB (which usually coach will write in his notes if he feels he is athletic enough to play the position.

So he cleared up my questions on the size issue! Hope my response didn't come across as questioning their knowledge in any way haha!

and my response back:

Coach Rahl-

Thanks again, I will try and get into contact with Jonah's coach over at American Fork and pass along the information to gauge his interest. Thanks again for the responses and I'll continue to keep an eye out for potential future Cowboys!

Thanks,

Thanks TS for the line! haha

Haha. Thats great. I think your response was great. Got an idea of what they were looking for and didn't sound like you were disagreeing. I am still impressed with how open they have been about this. Not sure how they would feel about it being out in the open on a messageboard though...haha.

Rahl had been pure business and very professional. I don't think that he would mind if wyoming's biggest fans were getting a read on the emails. After all, everyone of their emails can be read.

Rahl, is handling this better than I probably would.

exactly. These coaches are smart guys. they know their emails are public anyway. Why not have transparency. I think it is positive for them to include fans. Makes us feel invested.

Yeah I was kinda joking about him caring about it being on here. The coaching staff has been very open and forthcoming about this. Very cool.

You think there is a way to let Shyatts staff know about basketball recruits the same way you let Rahl know about football recuits?
There is a kid from Evanston who I think is a freshman. His 3 older brothers were all good basketball players and he grew up playing it, and last time I saw this kid he was around 6' tall and is very young. But extremely talented. He was the only freshman to play on Evanstons State Championship team this season.

I'd say send an email to little Shyatt or Coach Edwards in the same way SLC did and see what happens. A six foot 9th grader who was just on the roster for Evanston probably isn't going to get their attention yet though.

If you truly think this kid is D-1 material, you better get him on a Salt Lake AAU team immediately as well.

I think the kid is already playing AAU ball in SLC.
This kid in elementary school was beating kids in high school.
Cocky little shit, but he is good.
