I feel like there was a big emphasis on recruiting for defense this year, and it will probably continue into this upcoming season as well. We simply don't have the horses on defense right now, but the coaching staff seems to have recognized the problem and are working on cleaning it up.BJC said:So the defense. SLCPoke said:I agree that the offense SHOULD (agree with J-Rod, that word is scary) be pretty damn potent this year. I think there is a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball, but I think our problem is going to be playing our assignments. I don't think our defense is very disciplined, and that reflects on the coaching last year (I also think some of the defensive play calling was pretty vanilla). If our offense can hold up to even a majority of the talent they have, and our defense can just play solid assignment football (nothing spectacular)- we very easily could go 8-4 in my opinion. If not, I think we go 6-6....but 9-3 is the BEST that we pull off this year.
I wouldn't be talking about how bad of a coordinator Tormey is, he did have the number one defense in the nation for several years at Washington, he knows what he is doing. The main problem is he is a 3-4 guy and DC made him run a 4-3.Slow Hand said:The defensive talent is not the problem! It is the coordinator! When you go into a game against a triple option team and you have no scheme to stop the pitch man there is a problem! Hey Knucklehead it is D1 football....even a high school coach has assignments for all three aspects of the option! WOW! :tickedoff:
Well, looks like it's being switched to a 3-4 this year. We'll have to see how that goes.YankPoke said:I wouldn't be talking about how bad of a coordinator Tormey is, he did have the number one defense in the nation for several years at Washington, he knows what he is doing. I don't care if he is a 3-4, a 4-3, a 5-2, a 60 Bear, or a 4-4 guy....how can you not account for one of the three prongs of a triple option team? It is Madness I tell you ...madness! :!:
With a healthy Bretty Smith we win 8 games last year. That is two years in a row with 8 wins. Unfortunately, he got hurt and Jason Thompson wasn't ready yet....he is now. We also return every skill player but one...including a healthy Smith There are some holes to fill, but we have the players. The article about the two new bookend offensive tackles was very nice to hear.castlerocker said:If you do the math and go by what the pokes have done in the past and don't get caught up in the fairy tales and such, seems to me the un-emotional, un-inspirational conclusion would add up to a 6 and 6 record.
Yes, we do have some new players like Olive (he IS a freshman) and others but we could easily go back to 4 and 8 too.
In the last few years the poke fans have grossly over estimated the teams and the rest of the league has been
more realistic.
