Fan Board Meeting: Input Needed

Hi Folks!

I will be attending the UW Fan Board Meeting this weekend representing WyoNation.com. With basketball concluded I am guessing a big portion of our meeting will be feedback on the fan and gameday experience at the AA this season. If you have suggestions on how to improve the basketball fan experience or have praise please post them here and I will be sure to pass them along this weekend.

Thanks!

I think McPeachy has an opinion about Landmark......

Truer words have never been spoken. I have a couple of close friends that are season ticket holders, that supposedly have a meeting set up with Burman to discuss the AA - Landmark situation specifically. I have shared my thoughts with them, and they me, and would be happy to share them with Wicks as well. PM me.

Tell them to build an underground parking garage where the fieldhouse/Corbett/Fine Arts building lot currently is :)

We're building an underground parking garage on our hospital campus here.. the price per parking space in a parking garage would literally blow your mind (not in a good way).

Wicks - here are some thoughts I would share...or that I would ask the group to discuss:

Is the primary goal to increase attendance at all UW athletic events? Honestly, is it?
Or is there some other goal that exists that I am not aware of?
How does UW do in taking care of the fanbase?
How, really, is the experience for the everyday fan - both on field/court and also off?
How is the customer service (fanbase service)?
How is the customer (fan) treated, and does that customer feel valued and cared about?
Does that customer / fan feel he or she matters?
Is the fan / customer expectations exceeded when it comes to a game experience (both on field/court and off)? Does the fanbase feel like a burden instead of a welcomed guest?
What does UW do, to provide an exceptional experience that makes fan's want to return?
Does the price paid equal a reasonable fan experience return (on and off field / court)?

The list could go on and on. I like the idea of the fan board & meeting. It should help remove the blinders from the eyes of those that need to make a change.

If there was any way of reconstructing the student section so that the floor section isn't separated from the sections above the floor, I would do it. As it is, the students standing in the small bleachers on the floor are coordinated and into it; students in those sections above the floor, not so much. Think a continuous student section would make a big difference in the level of student game enthusiasm, participation, and coordinated participation.

You should suggest the athletics department reach out to alumni. I know the college of Ag does this (my wife still gets stuff four years after graduating) and the college of business does this. I've never received anything from the athletics department. A nice letter or booklet detailing how UW athletics is doing and what the AD has planned as far as events/promotions would be awesome. I think this would go along way in encouraging people to come to games, heck, I bet the AD would make a lot of money if they did this through increased donations. Afterall, athletics is the only link many of us have left to the University of Wyoming.

Also, student fan group have pregame meetings to coordinate and plan for student fan involvement; offer pregame pizza or something for attendance; maybe have cheerleaders there for at least part of it to coordinate some activities with them. Of course, you don't want student fan group to coordinate everything with the cheerleading squad--you want students to be more edgy. But this is a strategy used by other large bball programs in which there is large student fan involvement. Also, consider doing away with the cheerleaders standing in the aisles shouting WYO before first basket. Just a few thoughts.

That was definitely true part of the season. Towards the middle half of the season, the entire student section came alive. For CSU, every student seat was packed and the upper level was standing for much of the game. Our student section improved by leaps and bounds this year. We'll see if they can keep that momentum next year. I like the arrangement. It's unique. The floor seats give the diehards a reward for showing up early.

The main thing they need to change is the lower bowls empty seats for the less attended games. They should come up with a process to let people move down and fill in seats if they're still empty midway through the first half. Let the season ticket holders know that they're going to do it in case they do show up late: so they aren't surprised and they're prepared to kindly ask the people to find another seat.

The rest of the gameday experience is pretty damn good. They put on a first class show. The tickets are still cheap. The lighting is great. The seats are comfortable. The sound system kicks ass. Fire shoots from the backboards when players are introduced. The other things they need to improve: concessions, restrooms, and concourse will all be fixed in the next round of renovations.

They do need to address the lower bowl seating for the less attended games. The atmosphere sucks when the lower bowl is half empty. It looks pathetic on t.v. Allowing fans to move down would be a good way for the athletics department to give a little back to the fans.

+1 to this. Revising the seating rules/strategy needs to be a topic of discussion.

Another thing I thought about was the rumor that students we're escorted out because they wouldn't sit down. That should never happen again if it was true.

In other words, have the security ease up on the fans during the games. So long as it isn't bad (like threatening people, trying to start a fight, harassing other people, or anything like that), leave them be.

Montana does this occasionally.. they call it the 8 minute dash or something like that.. where you can move from the upper bowl to the lower of an unused seat.

I think letting fans move down would actually help season ticket sales. Once you move down you don't want to sit in the upper bowl anymore. You get to experience what the season ticket holders are like in different areas. For my girlfriend and I, we found out which season ticket neighbors we like the best. We know where the boring/quiet people are that give you dirty looks when you make too much noise. We won't go back there. We know where the rowdy fans are that like to raise a little hell. We want to buy season tickets in one of those areas and will when we move to Laramie next year.

Letting people move down would show the fans that it's not all about the money while encouraging people to move to higher dollar seats permanently.

That seems like a win/win to me.

Wiouldn't it hurt it?

Why buy a lower level seat at lower level price if you know you can sit in the lower bowl most of the game and still pay upper bowl price?

Right....those are some of the questions.

But those are (mostly) questions for fans. What are your answers?

Agreed. I don't see allure of a "test sit" suddenly making people fork out money they didn't want to fork out this season. Especially now that the upper bowl is getting new seating. While I do agree with some of the complaints about the game day environment and the Landmark staff, I don't agree we should let people free roam and take seats they didn't pay for
