Number one rule if you hit the lottery: Don't fucking tell anyone! Well, spouse maybe excepted. What you're supposed to do is, immediately lawyer up, establish a blind trust, and have the trust cash the ticket. Don't tell relatives.

Something tells me that I'd fare better than the statistics cited above.

The problem is that with most lotteries, your name becomes public information as part of the lottery's advertising campaign. They won't let you anonymously claim the money through a trust, but want an actual face for the whole thing.

If you CAN do that, however, you're gold. Don't quit your job, don't change your lifestyle (too much), but paying off debt would definitely be a way to go. Heck, if there was a lottery where the first price was a tax-free forgiveness of ALL debt (mortgage included) and nothing else, that's something I'd love to win
