Update: Ray Giacoletti? Check. Dave Rice? Check. Jeremy Cox? Check. These are just the first few names flowing out of the UW coaching void. Here's where we will add a few other options that AD Tom Burman might consider: Dave Wojick. The former Wake Forest assistant and current Boise State associate head coach has constantly been mentioned on best assistants' lists and we have a feeling Wyoming may go with a coach who has experience in western conferences. Another option? Reach out to the Missouri Valley conference. Zach Creglow of the Casper Star-Tribune lists both Cuonzo Martin (Missouri State) and Ben Jacobson (UNI) as potential options to fill the opening.

UPDATE: Just speculating here, but another name that could potentially come up in the conversation is that of Gonzaga assistant coach Ray Giacoletti.

Giacoletti is in his fourth season on Mark Few's staff, but has a wealth of head coaching experience on his resume. After successful stops at North Dakota State and Eastern Washington, Giacoletti took over for Rick Majerus at Utah in 2005 and promptly led the Utes to a 29-6 record, taking home the Mountain West Conference coach of the year honors.

Even more interesting, Few's staff has already been mined twice in recent years -- Bill Grier took over at the University of San Diego and Leon Smith left for Boise State -- so the trail has already been blazed. Will it happen again? Could Giacoletti return to the MWC? We think it could, but in the mean time we'll continue to monitor the coaching candidates and keep you posted on further updates.

BYU associate head coach Dave Rice and South Florida assistant coach Jeremy Cox have emerged as two possible candidates for Wyoming's vacant head basketball coaching position, according to SportsByBrooks.com, which first broke the news Monday evening that the Cowboys had fired head coach Heath Schroyer after three-and-a-half seasons in Laramie. Wyoming's current associate head coach, Fred Langley, will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2010-11 season.

According to Eric Schmoldt of the Casper Star-Tribune, other possibilities include Florida assistant Larry Shyatt, North Texas head coach Johnny Jones, and Langley.

Schmoldt points out that Shyatt was head coach at Wyoming in 1997-98 before taking the head coaching job at Clemson, and Cox was a former graduate assistant at Wyoming in the early 1990s.

BYU beat writer Jay Drew of The Salt Lake Tribune spoke with Dave Rice after the Cougars practice on Monday, but the BYU assistant offered little.

"The only comment I would have right now is that my whole focus right now is on helping coach [Dave] Rose and our staff get ready for Air Force on Wednesday," Rice said.

We'll keep you updated as this story evolves and more coaching candidates enter the picture.
