ESPN insider picks Wyoming second

"To the casual observer, Wyoming might be a bold and somewhat unconventional pick to finish second, but Larry Shyatt has quietly put together an outstanding team. The Cowboys are built around Shyatt's "face-guard" defense, a stingy man-to-man approach that forsakes offensive rebounds to prevent transition opportunities, defends the paint with ferocity and then uses forwards Larry Nance Jr. and Derek Cooke Jr. (who each pull down about one in four opponent misses) to secure the loose ball.

"It was a knee injury to Nance that torpedoed Wyoming's chances last season. The All-MWC first-teamer is expected to be healthy when the season starts, and he's good enough to carry the Cowboys to the NCAAs if he gets some help. The wild card could be Charles Hankerson Jr., who was solid last season before going down with an injury. The Cowboys need him to be better than solid."

Also picks Nance to first team all-MWC.

Discuss.

A healthy Nance is the key. If he comes back at 100%.....yes I firmly believe they can make a run at 2nd in the MW. We have a solid core of experienced starters. I am really interested in who will emerge as the big contributors off the bench.

No josh Adams mention? Then he doesn't know wyoming's team
This is the truth. Hankerson never went down with an injury, he went down with a suspension. Hankerson will be important to completing the starting 5, but Adams and Nance will carry this team.

I think Riley Grabau is going to be the break out player for Wyoming this year, and possibly get an all-conference nod. It sounds like he's in much better shape. With Adams a junior and Liebermann at point, we should be able to keep Riley's legs fresh this year.

Having Grabau and Gorski(the two G's) sitting on the three point line is a scary prospect for defenses trying to cover Adams penetration and Nance/Cooke in the post. If you double off either Riley or Gorski, you just gave up three points.

I think Grabau is going to have a monster year with a killer assist/turnover ratio, 90 + percent free throw shooting, and a 3 point percentage that finally finishes the year at the top of the NCAA rankings.

Don't sleep on Grabau you haters. He's a stud.

Nice to see we are receiving more respect. The Cowboys were in the NCAAT talk in late January/February last season. However, a few untimely losses did us in. Depending on the resume, a second place finish this season might be good enough for an NCAAT berth. That would be the first since 2002. Here's to hoping! :)
