Do you really think Texas State is a trap game?

Do you really think this coming weekends game against Tx-St is a trap game....
Or is it that throughout the years of your life you have spent watching Cowboy football you are protecting yourselves from the inevitable let down and just telling yourself it is a trap so you don't get hurt?
You know, the way that people do after they are in an abusive relationship then meet someone new and are extremely cautious about where it is heading?

I get it, Wyo started 4-1 under Glenn that season, then went something like 1-6 to finish the season.
Had the awesome first year with DC and ACS then got all amped about year two then went 3-9.
Or how Wyo went 8-5 with Smith his freshman year then went 4-8 last year.

Too many times the Pokes SHOULD have won, but didn't.
The let down against Cal Poly last season is still VERY fresh in everyone's mind, so it's hard to believe the team is actually good.

If you guys truly believe it is a trap game, that is fine, if you are just hesitant about this Pokes team because of past Pokes teams, BeaverPoke is here for some Wyo Football counseling.

Amen Beaver haha! I am right there with you I got a fever and the only cure is more TOUCHDOWNS! Pokes to win the division and host the conference championship in Laramie December 7th :thumb:

"Football counseling" should be a lucrative offering for our fan base.

Being younger, you didn't even mention the complete no-show in the final game of the season at SDSU in 99 with a share of the inaugural MWC title on the line (and I mean complete, lost by 32 to a bad SDSU team), or blowing a 8-1 start in 98 and not even making a bowl, or one of the most epic choke jobs ever experienced in Boulder in 97, or the icing on the cake....punt the ball Joe! in 96.

Of course, there is also the Vic era, but you will mostly be dealing with suppressed memories of those years.

..and opposing fans wonder why Poke fans drink so much? :D

I wouldnt be the man I am today without Coach K. I became much more creative and fluent with my use of profanity and acquired a taste for really hard liquor before kickoff.

Before Sat. night, I thought Texas State could have been a trap game. I was basing that mostly on the slow starts with both Idaho and UNC, which I still think occurred because we were focused on AF.

That game is behind us now, and with the convincing blow out win we didn't need to expend a lot of emotional energy. I really expected a much closer game, which could have left the team emotionally drained, with a good opponent this week. But that game looked like the players were having a ton of fun, and they all enjoyed rubbing the Academy's (read: Calhoun's) nose in it.

I don't expect a let down this week, and I don't think this will be a trap game. As long as DC can keep the players focused this week, we'll be ok.

GO POKES!

I can't see it as a trap, especially with a bye week the week after, the rest should do us fairly good heading into New Mexico Oct 12. But we'll see it's still a road game down in Texas and that's really never easy. Thank goodness it's a home game, and we need all fans to come out and support the Pokes well both UNM and CSU.
Keep up the great work Pokes

opening line is UW -11 or so.

Next three games are huge for our program. Gain a head of steam headed into the roughest part of the schedule.

Oh my gawd. Can't believe you brought that up - and totally jacked my Monday. :tickedoff:

That said...based on the let down alone (Nebraska-Idaho-Northern Colorado), yes - this should be considered a trap game. Not to mention the brief history lesson from Nowhere Poke. The Pokes do have something going for them though - knowing that the following week is a bye week, and then the "real" schedule begins (in other words, play as hard and fast as possible on 9/28, as you have the following week "off").

Yeah, I'm definitely guilty of calling this a trap game because of our history. I've been let down too many times in the last decade to expect an easy win. Another 14+ point win, and maybe I'll start to relax a little bit, finally.

This goes for me too.

I talked to Thompson waiting for class again today and said wow you weren't joking about AFA were you? He laughed and said "no man I told you".
I asked him about Texas State and it being a potential let down, and he said no way they are focused. They want to get this win and go into the bye week. They are focused and are going to do everything they can to get the win heading into the bye.
He said they have a good defense, and dominate the time of possession so they need to make the best out of every drive.

I really believe they will score quickly on Tx-St. and go for TDs as much as possible, knowing that they won't get the ball that much.

UW better score often, cause they may not see the ball much.

The O is clickin and the D look like they have good chemistry.

It's definitely not a "trap" game by definition. A "trap" game happens when a team gets caught looking ahead and overlooking their next opponent following a big win or a bye following a win. While winning at AFA, for this team anyway, was a big win, with the Texas State game being bracketed on the other end with a bye, it's not a trap game.

That being said, it could be a let-down game if the 'Pokes aren't focused on playing one game at a time and living in the moment. Personally, I think with a bye week coming up before returning to the War against the Lobos, it's very unlikely they lose focus, basically because there's nothing else to focus on. They will go down to San Marcos and take care of business before getting a break. Wyo 45- Texas State 13.

Just to point this out, many Texas State fans seem to think this is a trap game and that their defense will slow us down, if not stop us in our tracks.

Pick a thread, any thread, you'll see what I mean.

I wouldn't say we think it will be a trap game per se, just that your offense won't be a huge surprise. You'll no doubt have the most talented QB we've faced, but you are not Texas Tech in size, depth, etc.

To put it in perspective for y'all, here's what someone pointed out on the bobcat board:

When we played Tech, they got 96 plays, at 17 seconds per.

Wyoming was at 20 seconds per, in three out of five games. If they average 18, it's because they were at 16.x for the Northern Colorado game.

The Wyoming team we see is probably not going to run plays as fast as the Tech team we saw.

And please know that I don't think any of us are counting this as a sure win like y'all are. We aren't worried about slowing you down, we are worried about relying on the offense to score more points than the defense

Actually, the Northern Colorado game is what dropped the play time average. With Smith's ankle wrapped up like a cast, our play calling and time between snaps was greatly diminished. Look at the thread with the NCAA averages through 3 games...its 18 seconds, not 20. That included the UNC game.

But whatever, the Air Fart fans said the same thing that the TS fans are saying. Saturday will tell the story. I think that Wyo is faster than Tech. You did NOT face an offense like Wyoming's when you played Tech (2 freshman qb's???? reallY?).

Well since majority of y'all are banking on a blowout, you should bet your ranch on it since vegas only has you winning by 11

Vegas had us beating Air Force by 5 too. We have beaten the spread all 4 weeks this year, closest we came to not covering was the UNC game.

Umm? Vegas only had us at 4.5 for the AFA game. And you saw what happened there... Laugh all you want, but our current QB was a freshman the first year you saw us and you know what happened (clearing throat) 45-10. Now he's seasoned and has far more talented wideouts this year. And unlike Texas Tech we have a running game. On top of that, your defense has an over inflated ranking. Yes, it's true. You kind of stopped arguably the worst FBS school in S Miss, yet they still put up 400 yards on you. You stop PVA&M. (Amazing). Then you gave up over 400 yards to two Freshman QBs and a 1 deminsional offense in TTU... I don't think you have much to laugh about.
