There was an article in the CST today (Sunday) about Sullivan who kicked a 64 yard field goal during the walk through scrimmage on Saturday. This was the first time all fall when he has been healthy. He tried kicking some earlier in fall camp, but was still feeling the effects of being injured.
I'm feeling better about this team the closer we get to the first game - it is really getting it together.

The record is Martín Gramática, Kansas State vs. Northern Illinois (FBS) 1998 with a 65 yard field goal. Off a tee the record is 67.

Will Sullivan get a chance to bomb a long one during the next four years in Laramie? We'll see.....

Something quite interesting:

Who holds the NCAA Record for hitting the goal post the most whilst attempting a field goal.

Everyone should know this guys name.

Aric Goodman from Colorado - 9 times.

No kidding.

I really thought Mason Crosby nailed a couple of longer ones while at CU, but I guess they were all in practice.

I don't want to know how or why you know this stat...

Crosby attempted and hit a load of long field goals, but I believe the longest made field goal was 60 yards. He took longer ones as the coaches knew he had the potential to hit them. It's actually pretty normal for college kickers to end practice by backing up and taking and making +60 yard field goals. I watched our previous kickers do it as well. Without a snap, hold and rush it's really just a straight kick off. I only think DC mentioned it because Sullivan has had a tough couple scrimmages with his injury and wants to build his confidence going into the season. If he can hit long field goals in game situations then field position will be something other coaches will have to keep in mind (ie-they may not "go for it" on 4th down if they think a couple first downs puts us in scoring distance). As a previous posted said, could you imagine if we're in striking range every time we cross to fifty?

This is where I found the stat about Goodman hitting the goal posts. (scroll to the bottom)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_football_records_(individual)

If memory serves correctly, he lost a game for us by doing just that and it wasn't long after that he transferred to CU. The record he established was at CU during the 2008-09 season.

I'm glad he took that to CU to do it for (to) them.

if we can realistically kick FG's on every 4th down inside the fifty...can you imagine what that would do to A-Mac's punt yard average

That was at Virgina in 2006. I was at that game. Goodman missed the extra point wide right to go into the third overtime with the Cavs. Pokes lost 13-12. Next year, however, the Cowboys kicked Virginia's butt good in Laramie.
