Devin Moore Undrafted

our beloved RB Devin Moore was undrafted in this 2009 NFL Draft...

its kinda depressing, but im sure he will get his chance being a undrafted free agent, and being able to choose from which ever teams offer him

I'm sure he'll get an offer somewhere. He'll start off on spec. teams, but the sky is the limit from there.

To be honest, Devin Moore is a special teams player at best. Some very good college football players just don't translate into NFL players. Marcus Harris comes to mind. Some average college football players end up doing well in the NFL. For example, Corey Mace was on an NFL roster last year. I don't even think he ever made an All-MWC team if my memory serves me correct. He sure as hell didn't pop out at me when I watched those Wyoming teams play, but he was big and extrememly strong, so an NFL team decided to take a chance on him. I wasn't surprised one bit that Devin wasn't selected. You have to think about it from the NFL teams' perspectives. Devin is one of those "borderline" guys. Why waste a pick on him when there is a good chance you can sign him as a free agent after the draft anyways? Don't get me wrong, I loved having Devin as a Poke. He just doesn't translate well into the NFL in my opinion.

While watching the draft over the weekend, all I could think about is Joe Glenn telling me about three years ago how excited he was to be coaching his own recruits. Now, the UW recruiting slate ends up blank once again on draft day. I understand that sometimes good college players don't make good pros, but I can't help but think about the suspect of quality recruits Glenn was bringing in.

We all thought he was recruiting well, but in the end we find out that he certainly was not. He was recruiting nice guys, similar to himself. And then to hear all the stories about the grab-ass practices, etc, seeing a blank slate on draft day makes me mad as hell to think about all of that. Note to Joe Glenn and his departed staff: Sometimes, nice guys finish last.

The straw that broke the camel's back for me was the day I was sitting at the bar at the Alibi with coach Breske watching ESPN. We were watching a clip of Bob Knight. I asked Breske his thoughts on Knight's coaching style and behavior. Breske tells me in all sincerity that Knight's actions were an "act." I about fell out of my chair. I asked him if he were serious? He said he certainly was.

I knew then why the teams under that coaching staff continued to fail year after year. I couldn't believe he thought Knight's tirades were an act. It was obvious that he (Breske) had never been around a guy like Knight. Unfortunately, I have. My father and my wrestling coach in high school are scarily similar to Knight. And from my experience, you can see it in his eyes, his voice and his body language that it is NO act. Although I don't 100% condone all of Knight's actions, I certainly do not. But, I firmly believe a little bit of that type of coaching style was very much needed the past 6 years (minus the chocking, name calling and chair throwing). A little firmness and discipline goes a long way. Clearly something Glenn and his staff lacked.

Sorry for the rant. But that was all I could think about this weekend while watching the draft, knowing that no Wyoming player even had a remote chance of getting his named called, even in the late rounds.

Yep, I was on the Glen bandwagon for about the first 3 years and was making excuses for the team's failures, but then it started sinking in and became very visable what was going on. Glen's loyalty to his inept and less than mediocre staff was the most glaring fault.
In reading and hearing Dave Christensen's comments after the spring game, I hope there are some football players out there that didn't get recruited that really have some skills and want to play that will come to walk on at UW this fall. It is obvious we need all the help we can get. And to those that are on scolarships and aren't serious about getting the job done, you aren't long for this program.
We are on the road to recovery, but Glen and his staff put us in a hole. How did we allow our football and basketball programs to get in this shape?

While I realize getting drafted in the 7th round would have been a little better for D-Mo in the short term when it comes to money, specifically probably a small signing bonus; in the long run being able to sign as an unrestricted free agent over being a late 7th round pick could work to his advantage. He will have more say in which team he goes to and can pick one that fits his style. Either way he would be a long shot to make a roster, and will have to wow the coaches in training camps. I wish him good luck and hope he sticks.
