While watching the draft over the weekend, all I could think about is Joe Glenn telling me about three years ago how excited he was to be coaching his own recruits. Now, the UW recruiting slate ends up blank once again on draft day. I understand that sometimes good college players don't make good pros, but I can't help but think about the suspect of quality recruits Glenn was bringing in.
We all thought he was recruiting well, but in the end we find out that he certainly was not. He was recruiting nice guys, similar to himself. And then to hear all the stories about the grab-ass practices, etc, seeing a blank slate on draft day makes me mad as hell to think about all of that. Note to Joe Glenn and his departed staff: Sometimes, nice guys finish last.
The straw that broke the camel's back for me was the day I was sitting at the bar at the Alibi with coach Breske watching ESPN. We were watching a clip of Bob Knight. I asked Breske his thoughts on Knight's coaching style and behavior. Breske tells me in all sincerity that Knight's actions were an "act." I about fell out of my chair. I asked him if he were serious? He said he certainly was.
I knew then why the teams under that coaching staff continued to fail year after year. I couldn't believe he thought Knight's tirades were an act. It was obvious that he (Breske) had never been around a guy like Knight. Unfortunately, I have. My father and my wrestling coach in high school are scarily similar to Knight. And from my experience, you can see it in his eyes, his voice and his body language that it is NO act. Although I don't 100% condone all of Knight's actions, I certainly do not. But, I firmly believe a little bit of that type of coaching style was very much needed the past 6 years (minus the chocking, name calling and chair throwing). A little firmness and discipline goes a long way. Clearly something Glenn and his staff lacked.
Sorry for the rant. But that was all I could think about this weekend while watching the draft, knowing that no Wyoming player even had a remote chance of getting his named called, even in the late rounds.
