DC was at our table last night at a coaches dinner...

He was very upbeat about the season and his excitement related to being able to call plays again was palpable. He was very pleased with the progress made in the Spring and is looking forward to Fall camp and the installation of the new turf, which he said is state of the art and going to be a great thing for the players.

In the past, I had always seen him as being distant and aloof. My opinion changed quite a bit over the course of dinner. He was engaging and down to earth, at least to me. He even joked that, when considering our road travel schedule, he would appreciate our attendance at the Air Force game because he needed as many friends as he could get.

When he offered remarks to the entire group, he noted that Wyoming was in the top 10% in the country (ahead of the likes of Stanford, Vandy and others) in terms of APR (or whatever that academic acronym is). He was very proud of the hundreds of hours of community service logged by the team and the pending mission trip to Haiti, which follows an earlier trip members of the team took to the country to help rebuild. He also noted his recent discussion with Brett Smith and Brett's experience at a recent CJC golf event in Worland. Apparently, Brett was taken aback by the level of support and intensity of that support for the Pokes across the state.

In terms of the other programs, Coach Branch spoke and talked about his program, recent success, the great recruits they have coming in and the level of talent already in the program that were redshirted last season. Coach Shyatt was pretty candid about last season and the impact of the mid-season issues on the team. He described the experience as trying to turn a ship around, but never quite getting it done. He talked about not only the issue with Martinez (generally), but also The Boss' and Nance's health issues really taking their toll. Coach Legerski was typical Legerski. He made specific reference to Sewell and the fact that she never practiced on any Monday during the season, so she could go to class. As a result, they couldn't fully install their gameplan until Tuesday...but it was part of the deal, as Sewell and her education were paramount. He also noted that Kayla Woodward was shooting somewhere near 30,000 shots over the summer...and as a result, she could shoot whenever she wanted.

Burman talked about the modifications to the AA and the excellent progress made in the academic realm by nearly every team. All in all, a good night. All the coaches acknowledged that they are (and understand that they have to be) judged on wins and losses...but that their players should be judged on much more, notably their academic prowess, dedication to the state and community service and awareness. I was certainly proud to be a Wyoming Cowboy...even moreso than I was going in. If we can add the W's, well, you can't ask for much more in life, especially if they involve beating those SOB's from Fart Colons.

They hope to start, if I heard correctly, after next season on phase 1, which is the expansion of the court area for additional practice courts and the installation of the telescoping seats all the way to the new floor. With early fundraising and legislative appropriations, they were preparing with that as the plan anyway.

The joke between the BBall coaches and Burman was that they were told to be out by late March of next year so they could start demo and construction, which the coaches joked alleviated them of the need to win. Burman reminded them that Wyoming does not host any NCAA tourney games next year, so that excuse doesn't pan.

Nothing really on new players. He did confirm that we are playing at Ohio State (on the ride up the elevator to the Wildcatter).

Obviously the deal with Sewell and Legerski worked out pretty well as she was one of the best players in the conference and the Cowgirls were one of the best teams in the conference as well.. good on them both.

Good to see DC coming around.. he can't survive by being Nick Saban unless he's winning glass footballs.

I like the way you stated that.

My feelings about DCs personality was that when he was the top assistant in the country running the best offense in the country at Mizzou, he got a big ego. Not that it is a bad thing, because it seems that every football coach all way down to peewee football has a big ego.
Then he comes to Wyo trying to do what Utah did. Take a decent MWC school, go to a BCS Bowl and go to a huge program (Urban Meyer) or even build Wyo into a huge program and hope a BCS conference invites Wyo (Kyle Whittingham)
He has that 7-6 season with the highlights being the final 2 games, winning the boot in FoCo and the NM Bowl.
So then his ego is growing and his "master plan" is all coming together. Plus he was starting a bad ass named ACS. (We all loved ACS, not now, but he definitely was the face of Wyo football)
Then it got a little ugly in year 2, so he hired new people after that.
Then it was a good season, followed by an extremely frustrating one that led to the Howdy Doody thing.
I think then he has been "put in his place" or faced reality or what ever you wanna call it.
And now he is simply just trying to win again, instead of thinking his "master plan" was going to play out.

I could be waaaay wrong but I think he has changed his attitude and way of thinking and is actually building a team that will win and he isn't the only one that isn't going to benefit.

Big fan of DC. Know him personally and truly one of the most genuine people around. Really has a passion for Cowboy football and the brand... Treats it like a big time program, which is what we all want right?

It's interesting to see everyone's different views of DC. Just like any football coach, many faces for different audiences.

I like him a lot too. I didn't mean for my long post to come off like I think he is an ass, I was just trying to guess what DCs mindset about him being a head coach is.

I've met him, but don't really "know him".

I would love it if he stayed at Wyo his entire career.
Be the next Bobby Bowden. I used to say the next JoePa, but now when ever you reference JoePa, the whole Sandusky scandal comes up.

DC is a good dude. I've met him a few times and have nothing bad to say about him. I hope he destroys the competition this year and continues to do so for years to come.

Never had the pleasure of meeting him, but I wish him and the players the best of luck this season.

Great post and insight! I never once thought poorly of him for howdy doody. Bad that it happened yes, but I've thrown a few profanity laden rants out in my day that I didn't feel great about after I simmered down. I hope he does well.

Btw, I do not think he is gone if we win 4 games this year, which we won't. We're going 12-0!

Shyatt announced it a while ago, and I guess re confirmed it, so I don't think we need to wait on the AD for confirmation.
He also wants a game in Florida.
