Daylon Harrison signs with UW...

Kind of old news, as it happened Saturday, but none-the-less. I had the opportunity to talk with some people he spent some time with this past weekend in Laramie...and he is excited to be a poke. He will probably redshirt this next season.

I can't help but to think this guy was signed to keep our APR up. He just does not have DI basketball skills. I had hoped we were done recruiting guys that would be transferring to DII progrmas in a year or two (ie. Platt, Nelson).

I am not sure that you are wrong...unfortunately.

He was choosing between us and Butler, who is a powerhouse mid major. The guy was so underrated through highschool and will be one of our best shooters. He shot like 50% from the field his senior year and around 40% from the perimeter. I am very excited about this signing. What makes you guys think he is DII material and not D1? He was also the tournament MVP for the Ohio D2 state championship. Maybe LeBron will come to Laramie to watch this guy. haha

It is my understanding that Daylen was actually down to Wyoming and Cornell. He may have been recruited by Butler, but I don't think they ever made an offer to give him a scholarship. I've watched the limited film I can find on this guy, and I just don't think he has what it takes to cut it in the MWC. Most of the people I've talked with who have insight into the Midwest basketball scene weren't very high on Daylen as a basketball player. They thought he was a solid player in D2 Ohio high school basketball. Nothing more. Nothing less. Frankly, I don't think he was underrated at all. Ohio is certainly known to produce some big time recruits, so it isn't like he was just in an under puplicized part of the country. Don't get me wrong, from all acounts the guy has one hell of a solid character. He will likely do very well for himself in whatever he chooses to do with his life. I'm just not convinced he deserves a MWC athletics scholarship.

I'm probably in the minority, but I am extremely happy we got him. I like great student-athletes!! Although, I would have advised him to go to an ivy league school...because he has a great future and that future is not the NBA.

This kid had a 4.0 and got a 30 ACT. You guys realize how few ppl there are like that at UW (and we arent talking just athletes)? Those are even fairly good numbers for Mines.

I know everyone will talk about wanting basketball players and not students, but the best players usually have a good head on their shoulders too.

I totally disagree about the best players being smart or having a good head on their shoulders. To be totally honest, the best players are usually arrogant, over-confident, assholes that are full of themselves. It comes with the territory of being a big time athlete. Of course you have to draw the line somewhere, but often it's that cocky attitude that got them to the high level they are at. Timid athletes rarely make a name for themselves. You have to believe you are the best player on the court/field at any given time. Daylen certainly deserves an academic scholarship to any university in this nation. He also deserves an athletics scholarship to a lower level D1 school. Does he deserve a basketball scholarship to a MWC team? Nope. Just my opinion of course.

I'll say it one more time. He shot like 50% from the field his senior year and around 40% from the perimeter.

I'm very aware of Daylen's stat line. Stats don't tell the entire story though. He will be facing much stiffer competition and more athletic players than what he saw in D2 Ohio high school basketball. I've seen a million guys like this...good high school basketball players who just don't have the skill set to contribute at a high level on an upper level collegiate basketball team. I'll eat crow if I'm wrong, but I don't see this guy seeing anything more than garbage time in his career at UW...however long that lasts.

Just wondering, are you basing your assessment of Daylon Harrison on stats or what you have heard, or have you actually seen him play and are you qualified as a recruiter at the D1 level? The reason I ask is because I think Schroyer signed him for a reason and I think he is a pretty good judge of talent.

I haven't been able to find a whole lot of film on Daylen that wasn't highlight type stuff for the purposes of attracting recruiting. I was able to find a limited amount of game film on him and I wasn't impressed with what I saw. I felt like I was watching an unpolished player who just happened to be better than most of the guys he was playing against. The competition looked very suspect to me. I'm very confident Natrona would have been a strong contender in D2 Ohio high school basketball this year. Just trying to give you an idea of what I saw as the talent level on the court. I do have a couple of friends who coach high school ball in the midwest region. None of them coached directly in a game against Daylen, but they were well aware of him (as with Desmar Jackson), and the general feeling was that he was OK player but probably wouldn't be much of contributor at a major college basketball program. Finally, no I am not a recruiter. I have watched a lot of high school basketball though. I like to watch how high scool/prep players translate into college. It's actually very interesting. Some top level high school basketball players can't cut it in college and some middle of the road players in high school turn out to be quite good college basketball players. Just based on what I've seen throughout the years, I just don't see Daylen as someone who is built excel on a MWC basketball team. I know Schroyer has good things to say about Daylen, but thats what a coach is supposed to say. I'm sure Schoryer would have taken Quinton Thomas over Daylen in a heartbeat had grades not been an issue.

Disagree with you somewhat. I am not going to pretend to know if Daylen will work out. All I have seen of him is probably the same video you saw (State Finals this year when they beat Dayton Marshall) and I am hardly qualified to determine his status as a D1 player, but your statement about Ohio Div II and Natrona is pretty far off IMO.

Just in the class of 2010 there are probably 10-12 guys at the Ohio Div II High School level that will play Division 1 basketball. There are at least 5 that will play at the MWC level or higher (Staten being the highest rated as a 4 star, top 100 guy, but players like Kellogg, Wright (recent decommit from OSU), etc. will play at this level as well). In contrast the State of Wyoming, in all classes and all levels, maybe has a couple of guys that will play at the MWC level or higher.

That doesn't mean that Harrison will work out (or that Dietz won't), but he did play and succeed against a solid level of competition.

Having said all that, I don't expect him to be a huge impact player. He wasn't a secret and the schools that recruited him (with the exception of Butler) are not the types of programs that could compete in the MWC.

Still, it's not too bad to have some of these types of guys, good role players and strong students. BYU just signed Logan Magnusson over interest from SUU. Hardly a big time recruit, but he was a solid role player on a very good JC team (national champs) where he was the 4th leading scorer. I see Harrison as a similar commit for Wyoming, only as a HS guy rather than JC.
