Good news. We were in need of a kicker on the roster and we got a real good one. Here's hoping his name will go into the record books with some of the all time great kickers and that he will win some games for us. Welcome Daniel Sullivan.

He's got a powerful leg for an 18 year old and he looks extremely accurate from distance, a key to kicking in Laramie.

Top of the evening to you Mr. Sullivan. Welcome aboard.

Huge get for us just from looking at his stuff id say he is already better than Watts... Sullivan= Ian who? Pittser= ACS who? and Ruff= Shamiel who?

Hopefully so, but big shoes to fill:

ACS: MWC Freshman of the Year, lead team to a handful of comebacks and a bowl game victory.
Watts: Third team Freshman All American, a few game winners, sent NM Bowl into OT.
Gary: First team Freshman All American, was leading the team in tackles til' he sat out.

If they can do this, combined with our weaker schedule, we should go bowling again!

Actual game play will be the true test, but from what I have seen of the new recruits, they won't just fill in - they will be upgrades. Those three who left didn't exactly tear things up last year and their attitude and off field conduct wasn't the best either.

The only thing that worries me about freshman kickers coming from high school is adjusting to kicking off the ground. Having coached a few kickers who went on to college; getting them to change their plant foot position and leg swing angle can be difficult because it's all muscle memory. It's why you rarely see any Freshman kickers starting at the D1 level. Their leg and mechanics simply haven't adjusted from kicking off the block to kicking off the ground.

We'll wait till he puts a few through the uprights. Hopefully he's only kicking a lot of extra points! :)

I think we might have upgraded two of the positions.

Watts was clutch from 40 yards in. In Laramie you have to be able to get points deeper than that. It's nice if you can get a touchback or two. I think Sullivan will be just fine for all those things. I'm guessing Sullivan is a better kicker than Watts.

Pittser is a higher rated recruit than ACS was. He excelled at the elite 11 camp. If you watch his tape you can see that he's more athletic than ACS was.

Gary was great at run stopping, but aside from his very first game he rarely played well against the pass. This is the only spot that hasn't been adequately replaced.

I actually think some of the best depth on the team is in the defensive secondary, especially at the safety position. Hypothetically, lets say Ruff grabs one of the starting safety spots. There are four other guys I expect to compete for the other starting spot (listed in order of liklihood IMO):

1. Mark Nzeocha - Of the 3 German players we have brought in so far, this guy is the best one. His film was very impressive. He is very technically sound, but shows a reserved aggressiveness that is perfect for the safety position. If he can pick up the mental side of the game quickly, I think he has the edge, even as a true freshman.

2. Marqueston Huff - Yes, I know that Huff was the 3rd CB last year and is in line to take over the starting spot at the CB position left open by the departure of Marcell Gipson. However, James Caraway isn't a slouch at the CB position and I don't think the staff will hesitate to move Huff to a safety position to get both of those guys on the field at the same time.

3. Darrenn White - I believe White was placed at the CB position last year as a true freshman, but he has the build to play safety if necessary. He has all the physical skills to be a great college football player and should benefit greatly from a redshirt year that gave him time to learn the mental side of the game.

4. Chad Reese - One of the earliest committments in the Pokes class this year, Reese has been overlooked by many. He is good...damn good. The only thing that puts him at the bottom of my list is he is still a bit small for the safety position. As Reese matures and puts on some muscle weight, he will make some bigtime noise at UW.

I know a lot of you are probably wondering why I didn't have Luke Anderson on this list. He's a JC guy and here I have 2 true freshman, 1 redshirt freshman, and 1 sophomore listed as more likely to play than him. Well, the reason is because I honestly believe the 4 players listed above are down right better than Anderson is. I wasn't nearly as impressed with his highlight film as many of you were. Yeah, he had some big hits, but a big hitter doesn't correlate to a good football player at all. I was able to get ahold of some non-highlight film of him and I saw way too many mistakes poor/slow reads. Thoughts?

He does kick a few from the thirty off of the ground on his youtube video, also i'm confident that if he cant handle kickoffs this year, the big german will do it again....its nice having a good cover guy kicking the ball anyways
