Gary was great at run stopping, but aside from his very first game he rarely played well against the pass. This is the only spot that hasn't been adequately replaced.
I actually think some of the best depth on the team is in the defensive secondary, especially at the safety position. Hypothetically, lets say Ruff grabs one of the starting safety spots. There are four other guys I expect to compete for the other starting spot (listed in order of liklihood IMO):
1. Mark Nzeocha - Of the 3 German players we have brought in so far, this guy is the best one. His film was very impressive. He is very technically sound, but shows a reserved aggressiveness that is perfect for the safety position. If he can pick up the mental side of the game quickly, I think he has the edge, even as a true freshman.
2. Marqueston Huff - Yes, I know that Huff was the 3rd CB last year and is in line to take over the starting spot at the CB position left open by the departure of Marcell Gipson. However, James Caraway isn't a slouch at the CB position and I don't think the staff will hesitate to move Huff to a safety position to get both of those guys on the field at the same time.
3. Darrenn White - I believe White was placed at the CB position last year as a true freshman, but he has the build to play safety if necessary. He has all the physical skills to be a great college football player and should benefit greatly from a redshirt year that gave him time to learn the mental side of the game.
4. Chad Reese - One of the earliest committments in the Pokes class this year, Reese has been overlooked by many. He is good...damn good. The only thing that puts him at the bottom of my list is he is still a bit small for the safety position. As Reese matures and puts on some muscle weight, he will make some bigtime noise at UW.
I know a lot of you are probably wondering why I didn't have Luke Anderson on this list. He's a JC guy and here I have 2 true freshman, 1 redshirt freshman, and 1 sophomore listed as more likely to play than him. Well, the reason is because I honestly believe the 4 players listed above are down right better than Anderson is. I wasn't nearly as impressed with his highlight film as many of you were. Yeah, he had some big hits, but a big hitter doesn't correlate to a good football player at all. I was able to get ahold of some non-highlight film of him and I saw way too many mistakes poor/slow reads. Thoughts?
