I am debating what magnum to buy for bear protection. I have narrowed it down to 4:

.44 mag, cheaper, reliable, ammo plentiful
.454 casul, cheapest, more power, ammo supply good
.460 S&W, expensivest, devastating power fastest pistol round on the market, ammo scarce
.500 S&W, expensive, a hair more devastating power, ammo available but pricey

Yeah decisions decisions. CFB needs to start...

Need more info. Do you reload? Are you hiking, biking, on horseback? Do you already own something in any of those calibers?

Too bad there is no practical gun size for bear protection while hiking or mountain biking. I carry bear spray, but my luck the wind would pick up and blow it right back in my face in the case I ever had to use it. :lol:

I am going to start reloading this fall. Not high on hiking or biking but will be on horseback or on ATVs so gun weight is not a big issue for me. While I have a .45 XD with hydrashoks, I am not going to trust that against a grizzleback. I also don't have a magnum of any caliber.

Another possibility is the Taurus Judge which fires .45 long colt, .45 acp, and 4.10 shot shells.

The Smith and Wesson Governor fires the .45 ACP, .45 LC, and 410...the Taurus Judge only shoots the .45LC and 410

I love my judge. Too big to really carry comfortably, but it's an awesome pistol.

As has been noted, it doesn't fire a .45 ACP, just .45 Long Colt and .410

The Governor is a better quality gun too. The Judge (and the Taurus line) was pulled off the shelves at one store here because they were getting too many returns/broken guns.

Good to know, I prefer S&W anyways. My last two guns I have bought have been S&W, a 9mm, and an AR M&P15. I also named my dogs Smith and Wesson.

You ever looked at the ballistics of the .410 from a Judge? It's a useless pistol for self defense.

Edit: I've owned a Taurus 24/7 in 9mm and a PT1911 and, after replacing most of the fcg in the 1911 with Wilson parts, will never buy/use anything made by Taurus ever again. Hammer follow on a 1911 is bad, mmmkay?

Save your money and carry bear spray. I know it's not the man thing to have but out of all bear encounters, you are way less likely to even be injured with spray compared to a handgun.

Nice knowing you dude! What if you blow your dick off trying to pull your gun out of your holster? A bear will stop if you drill it from 10 ft with pepper spray and you don't have to be a pro. Not so much with a gun. only a perfect shot will drop a bear in its tracks, and thats with a rifle. If you've ever practiced with bear spray, you'll change your mind. Google the BYU study on this topic (que BYU comments).

That's where the training part comes into play. I've carried a pistol my entire adult life and my balls are still intact. Train, keep the booger hook off the bang lever, carry bear spray too for all I care. Guns don't "just go off".

Also, you do realise that there are plenty of commercially available pistols chambered for rifle rounds that will not only stop a bear, but elephants, rhinos, wildebeest, etc?

My only issue is that I HAVE been hit by bear spray due to wind, and they don't state the calibers of firearms used for their data.

Ive met plenty of of flatlanders on the trail that think a 9mm or .45acp will work in bear country.

That was a good article, but I read the actual published scientific paper. Had lots more stats etc.

Anyhow, I think a lot of people don't even see the bear coming so it doesn't matter.

The other point is that you can't just shoot a grizzly that's standing there 20ft away or roaming around your camp. You can however, pepper spray the shit out of him. They investigate alleged self defense against grizzlies. Just because bear is close doesn't mean you can smoke him.

If they just opened hunting season to them, encounters with grizzly would go down 90%. No fear right now
