There are 3 basic types of meningitis, bacterial, viral and fungal. Bacterial is usually caused by Nisseria meningitidis or Haemophilus influenzae and is the most common and most widely known. I have only seen 1 case when I was in the ER, so its relatively rare especially given vaccinations. Viral and fungal don't are relatively rare and typically occur with immunocompromised individuals.
