Lovell’s Sheffler among Cowgirls 4 signees

LARAMIE (AP) — Guard Kristen Scheffler, of Lovell, is among four players Wyoming coach Joe Legerski announced signing to play for the Cowgirls beginning in the fall of 2008.

“We are excited about the additions to the Cowgirl basketball family,” Legerski said in a statement Wednesday. “They are replacing some great players that we currently have in the program right now, but we feel they can continue to build the program where we want it to go.”

The 5-foot-11 Scheffler is a two-time All-State selection. She averaged 18 points, five rebounds and four steals while helping her team to the runner-up spot in the state 2A championship as a junior last year.

A three-time letterwinner in basketball, she has also lettered in volleyball.

She is an honor roll member and has been named to the Wyoming Coaches Association Academic Team.

Legerski said Scheffler is probably the best shooter among the four he signed.

“We also look forward to Kristen carrying on the tradition in keeping the best players in the state of Wyoming, like we’ve been able to do with Megan McGuffey, Aubrey Vandiver and Hillary Carlson,” he said.

The others signed by Legerski are:

—Leah Fitzgerald, 6-2, forward/center from Colorado Springs, Colo. She has been named Honorable Mention All-State and Second Team All-League during her career. As a junior, she averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per game while being named the team MVP.

—Brenna Freeze, 5-11 guard from Albuquerque, N.M. As a junior, she earned All-Metro and All-State honors, while helping her team to a 24-9 record, a district championship and a spot in the state 5A semifinals. A three-year letterwinner in basketball, she has also earned letters in volleyball.

—Ashley Sickles, 6-1 forward from Cresco, Iowa. She was named First Team All-State by both the media and coaches. During her junior year, she averaged 19 points and 8.4 rebounds while helping her team to a 19-8 record and in to the second round of the 3A state playoffs. She has also earned letters in both track and field and softball.
