It will be interesting to see if any posters were able to attend to provide a first hand account. From a distance here are some random thoughts:
1. Competition level was low, but I think the dominance on the glass was a good sign, especially without Leonard in the game. Nance appears to be improving and Cooke's performance seems to back up what we saw from him in JC. Rebounding was the primary weakness in Waddell's game last year. We may be a better rebounding team this year with a 4/5 rotation of Nance, Washington, and Cooke.
2. Free throws aren't affected by level of competition, have to hit those. That was one of the strengths of last year's team. I understand that Cooke will likely struggle at times, but no real excuse for some of the other misses.
3. Adams will be a primary topic of discussion on this team this year, I suspect. He may be that one perimeter player on the roster that can make things happen going to the rim. An exciting player that will be fun to watch...if he isn't stuck on the bench for doing things like trying to dunk it at the end when Shyatt has called off the dogs.
4. Somewhat surprised by how little Sobey played. Coming in from JC, I expected him to be able to make an impact a little bit sooner.
5. A lot of perimeter threats on this team. Nance has range to the line and Gilmore adds more in that department than Jaydee could. McManamen had a nice showing from the arc in this game as well.
6. Interior defense was a major issue, but Leonard's absence didn't help. Still, this is something that needs to be improved upon. Sellers will probably see diminished playing time as Leonard comes back and the season moves along, but Cooke and Nance will be on the court plenty and they were both involved in some of the Ft. Lewis scoring.
Overall, it's always hard to read too much into an exhibition. Last year's first exhibition game was an underwhelming 85-78 win over CSU-Pueblo that hardly hinted at the defensive capabilities of that team.
Can't wait to actually see this team play and to see Leonard back in uniform.
