Cowboy wresting won the WWC tournament today and sent four Pokes to the NCAA tournament with automatic bids. At-large bids went to Michael Martinez and Zach Zehner. Joe LeBlanc, Patrick Martinez, Alfonso Hernandez, and Shane Onufer won their weights today. Michael Martinez finished 2nd along with Zehner. Andy McCulley finished 4th. Mark Branch was named WWC coach of the year. The Pokes also won the WWC regular season with a sweep of WWC opponents in duals. The NCAA tournament will be March 15-17 in St. Louis.

Great day for Cowboy wrestling!!! I'm the last person who wants to jinx this team, but this is a top 10 team, and I can't wait for Nationals. I bet Joe has a pocket scale this year.

Must not be the Alfonso Hernandez from here because I think all he does is drive around and go to jail

3 straight WWC Championships, 4 individual titles, 6 wrestlers automatically qualify for the NCAA Tournament and we possible could have more as there are still 40 that need to be selected and a to 10 to 15 ranking most of the season... I would say that is pretty impressive. :thumb:

Congrats to the Cowboys wrestling team and their coach Mark Branch!!!

I watched most of the tournament and honestly there were a few letdowns (top seeded Chase Smith went 0-2 and lost by pin and MD)...but if this team gets on a roll at Nationals, they could be top 5!

There is still an outside chance that Helbig or McCulley gets invited to the tournament. I really hope McCulley gets the invite, because I thought he really controlled the 3rd-4th place match and just got very unlucky in OT (if he won, he would have been in).

Alfonso Hernandez really was dominant at the WWC tournament and would have been my pick for outstanding wrestler. He has been a little under the radar (due to Onufer and Leblanc), but is something like 35-5 and could make some BIG noise at nationals as well.

If the Pokes have their best tournament, I can see 5 placers! (Martinez, Zehner, Onufer, Leblanc, Hernandez)
