I know this year was rough but I think most of it had to do with our lack of scholarship players (we were closer to fcs numbers than fbs). This recruiting class is shaping into something special. I don't know how many of these players will have an impact in 2011 but I hope DC evaluated the jucos correctly. I think were are very close to competing for a conference championship with this team and I expect to win in 2012!

Close to a conference championship? I don't think so. To be a champion in the MWC, you better have a top 15 team nationally. Even with the shake-up with the teams in the conference, you can bet that the MWC champ will be ranked in the top 15 teams in the nation.
Do you remember what soon to be MWC member Boise State did to us on our own field last year? BSU isn't getting drastically worse anytime soon. Do you remember how we got blown out by a 2 win UNLV team? What about giving New Mexico their only win of the entire season? How about barely beating an FCS team at home that went on to lose to 3 other FCS programs. I don't know about you, but that sure as hell doesn't sound like a team close to a MWC crown to me.
Our recruiting has improved since DC got here, but quite honestly, it hasn't improved enough to get us a conference championship. Scout.com ranked our recuiting class #102 in the nation last year and #95 the year before that. Now, you guys can argue that recruiting websites are biased towards successful schools, etc., but I'm willing to bet they weren't all that far off. Anybody want to claim we had a top 50 recruiting class...because it's going to take several of those before we ever compete for MWC championship.
I'm not trying to beat down on UW football...just trying to be realistic.

I can see a quick turnaround too. Not trying to be a homer, but we were small and inexperienced along the Dline and Oline this year, but lose nothing and get the two JC guys, plus another. That Boise game was a game we just came out flat. Maybe it had something to do with Ruben, or maybe not. But, we weren't ready to play. Our previous two games against them we much closer contests.
We had chances to win the Air Force game. We were in the SDSU game until late.....they lose their stud receivers who were the difference against us. We had a very good chance to win the BYU game too. You point out the loss to New Mexico, but that could have been a 28 point win in our favor if we hold onto the ball. You point out the close win against SUU, but fail to mention a road win at bowl bound Toledo. UNLV....can't say much. But, think we beat them 8 of 10 times. And we saw what we could do against CSU.
Why can't we compete for a conference title? TCU and Boise will be the top dogs next year, but we should be right there in the mix with the other teams.
Lastly, recruiting rankings are highly subjective. We're Wyoming, we're not going to get guys bumbed up for signing with us. But, the same guys we recruit who happen to sign with a bcs school usually get a nice bumb. If anything thinks it takes a top 50 class to compete, just look how Boise's recruiting classes usually rank.

I agree with the above poster, I don't want to be a negative nelly, but we were 3-9 last year. I think the program is finally starting to invest enough to become more competitive and I like where we are going, but to win the MWC you need to be a top 15-top 10 (in a good year) team. We have a long ways to go before we are to that level.

I don't think it will take a top fifteen team to win the mwc in many of the future years. That fact is that TCU & Utah are gone, and I believe Boise will be a top twenty five team most years but I doubt they can maintain the level of success they were used to in the WAC (they might run through the conference next year). I see Boise losing at least one game a year in the majority of their future years in the MWC (at leat I hope they do).
I also believe chris petersen leaves with in the next 3-4 years, but who knows what the college landscape will look like in that time. I know a lot of fans want us to compete for a mwc championship, and in 2012 our road should be easier. I get that people want us to compete with the big dogs, but if our admin wants to use boise as model for success playing tougher competion isn't the way to go (at least for the first couple conf. championships boise won, which helped build up their program).

Everything depends on the o-line. If they're good, Wyo wins. If they're not, they won't.

2010: #3 TCU, #10 BSU, #15 Nevada, #19 Utah, #24 Hawaii (No final polls yet)
2009: #4 BSU, #6 TCU, #12 BYU, #18 Utah
2008: #2 Utah, #7 TCU, #11 BSU, #25 BYU
I could go on.

Most of those teams are gone and it will hurt what ever team that wins the conference if they don't defeat high quality opponents such as byu,tcu, and utah. I doubt nevada will be in the top 25 next year and if boise drops a game in the mw they won't be in the top 15 next year. I agree with you that there will be years when a team will crack the top 15, but there are going to be years when the mwc champion is below the top 15 (and I would be willing to bet this ends up the more common occurence).
I guess time will tell though.

Those first few wins will be a positive. Are they against FCS schools? Yeah. But winning early could get the Pokes going with some upward movement. You look at 2010 for example, hard to build some consistency on offense and defense when you're getting beat by Texas and annihilated by Boise. The Cowboys don't get anything out of that. Hopefully some early wins can build their confidence.
Conference championships are far-fetched at best for Wyoming. But I think they could go bowling next season if the ball rolls their way in a few crucial games.
With that said, I'd also gauge expectations a bit. Nobody goes from losing to UNLV by 26 to winning 7 games without a serious makeover. Can they do it? Of course, but CDC is gonna have to put on his working boots to make this work.

These things go in cycles. Wyoming could very well go back up. At the moment, we don't have the right leadership to do it. That's the apex of ALL of Wyoming's problems the past 10 years. Unfortuately the losing has turned off most of the state to the point where the right people to turn things around aren't interested because nobody in the state cares nor is passionate enough to save Wyoming athletics.
I'm of the idea that Burman and others that wiped out UW athletics are being paid under the table by BYU and/or the BCS power conferences to keep Wyoming from being good again.
