Over the next few days Chad, Connor, and I will be releasing the Cowboy football season review. We cover what went right, what went wrong, and what's in store for next season. Today's blog is mine and I cover the offense.

Chase Roullier was the outstanding offensive lineman this season. Chase Appleby is a defensive lineman.

I agree with everything in the article. Some definite questions in relation to Vigen and what's going on with the offense....

The offense certainly had the tools to be good this year.. I won't say great, but I'll say good. Injuries certainly didn't help.. losing Gentry and Coffman at points in the year, plus Shaun Wick. I didn't think the offensive line would be so poor at pass protection. I would think the offense needs to exceed the 2014 offense next season to justify keeping Vigen on staff.

I think they could have done significantly better with minor adjustments. The Nevada game was proof that when you stopped running up the middle and attacked the edges our offense worked. But we spent way to much time running plays where we expected our O-line to dominate. You would think that after the EMU game he would have retooled the scheme to not be so focused on running hill between the tackles. I would imagine Vigen is running the offense the way bohl wants it or he would be gone. So I don't hold out much hope in him getting replaced.....

Was told that some of the sacks given up were bad line protection called by Cam. Also thought he held the ball a lot back there. Do think line play will improve greatly next year as all will have a year of experience helping lead the way.

I think the bad line protection was in part due to the opposing teams stacking the box and sending 6 or 7 on a large percentage of the plays.

Our offense was WAY TOO predictable this last season. I thought that Vigen's play calling was unimaginative most of the time. Part of that I am sure was due to the fact that Wyoming had no passing game to speak of, and only because Brian Hill is such a gifted runner were we not stuffed even more. Brian Hill had to do much of what he did on his own IMO. Wyoming has to become multi-dimensional without a doubt. If we run another year like this last one, the record won't improve much. Except for Hollister and Gentry we really didn't have dependable WR's out there. Too many drops, and too many passes thrown off the mark. We rarely went down the field, and when you do this, it gives the opposing defense many advantages. I would think that Josh Allen would have the advantage right now, but I am not against Chandler Garrett getting a long look, I think he is that good. Wyoming HAS TO develop a passing game, and hopefully a real WR coach would be able to help here. In conclusion, I was disappointed a number of times in Vigen's play calling, but due to the injuries and lack of production in certain areas, this may given him a bit of a pass, but without a doubt Vigen has to step up and improve his play calling for this program to move forward.....you are no longer at the FCS level Coach Vigen, there is a different level of game up here.

Has anyone watched any of the north dokota state games where they beat d1 schools when vigen was calling plays? I would like to know how he called them against the kansas states csu and I don't remember who else they beat.it would be interesting to know if he called the same game or if they used a lot better schemes. Maybe they are still trying to build the offense but everyone is right that it was very unimaginative. Hopefully that changes. Any insight to how he called games there vs here would be appreciated.

Yes, I watched the KSU game and that has nothing to do with this team and what is happening now...that is in the past. At NDSU Vigen had an experienced QB, and we all thought that we had one in Coffman, but I guess we were wrong, Coffman was inconsistent in his play and to give him every benefit of the doubt, his injuries had something to do with it. But the QB he had at NDSU was an experienced senior and he controlled the game well. While Coffman was out, Nick Smith played and he was very inexperienced, and it appeared that Vigen shut his play calling down to a very limited set of plays. It appeared that the only real plays that Vigen had confidence in were....Brian Hill to the left, Brian Hill up the middle and Brian Hill to the right. Hollister was a dependable pass catcher at the TE position and Gentry was until he was hurt, then after that any real type of deep offense appeared to be totally gone. Nick Smith didn't have a great timing with any of the pass catcher's. I really like our young WR's, but it appeared that they went through a fair amount of growth pains this last year. Some of those growth pains could have been corrected or shortened IMO if we had an experienced WR coach....and the hiring of a top tier WR coach is critical this offseason IMO. We need to do more pass action plays and more screens and mix those in with traditional running plays, as well as getting a real deep pass game developed. If all of your offensive play calling are plays that never go deeper than 10 yards it makes the defenses pack into the box. You have to get defenses to play on their heels some and keep them guessing....Vigen's offense did none of that this last year. Wyoming has to hold onto the ball, develop a much more varied offense and this requires Wyoming to develop more threats than just Brian Hill.

Thanks I know jensen was a good qb that was with ndsu for 3 years I was just curious if his play calling was different. I know we had a young team but they can't be afraid to open it up how will the kids learn execution without using more of the playbook. I hope next year will be a 180 from this year. Hopfully the coaches can develop these kids sooner than later. I support Bohl but next year we have to see a little progress. With the talent coming back the offense should be able to put up some points. Gentry maulhart hill are all proven and some good guys on the line back. But I was mainly just trying to figure out how vigen called games when he was at ndsu. If it was similar to last year here at UW or if it was different. You don't win 3 straight championships with the playcalling we had which I know can be attributed to youth and injuries. That learning curve seemed steep here this year.

I know he ran with Jensen more than with Cam...but that could change with Allen next year, we'll see
